Description
Thirty Seconds thoughts on a Wednesday afternoon.

DET trades 9OA for Cat, who comes with a moderate 7.912 hometown discount for 8 years. Both sides leave happy.

I just love Zach Benson, and he is available at 9OA. I think he would be the perfect skill partner in 2-3 years time for Stu as Giroux begins to age.

In 2025/2026, the top 9:

Brady - Stu - Benson
Barbashev - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Giroux

Pinto and Branny signed to 3 year contracts, so that they dont not come up at the same time as Chychrun.

Dorion loves winners, Barbashev and Kessel bring the hype and the experience.

Come deadline, acquire the best pending UFA goalie available for a moderate price. to shore up the position heading into playoffs

-----------------------

EDIT: According to the comments, DET fans want Michkov, and want to burn the next 3 years of Seider, Raymond and Larkin. Interesting strategy, the 10 year rebuild.

I find it very interesting that a lot of DET fans are saying this, but in my experience most fans from impartial teams say that getting a 40goal scorer in their prime, locked up for 8 years is what you would be PRAYING that 9OA turns into.

Fans of every fanbase famously over-value their own prospects and picks

I know the 2023 draft is deeper than the 2017 draft, but >6 years in Michael Rassmussen is an NHL player... but if you could trade him for Cat you know you would in a heartbeat. Sometimes there is value in the sure thing. IMHO, DET could use a little sure thing right now to support their good prospect pool as they look to make steps in a difficult division.

He scored 27G this season; I think you guys are factoring in the fact that he scored 41 the previous season a little too much.

Look at other picks that were 9, many winners there. Wings pass on this trade all day and it's not close

Without Kane he's a 25 goal scorer

Many of us want DeBrincat, but, at least for me, I expect who we pick at 9OA to be a DeBrincat-level player.

Or, more preferably, a trade up to get Michkov.

He has scored 41 twice, out of 6 seasons. Last season proved that unless he has an elite playmaker feeding him the puck he is a 25 goal guy. He does have considerable value but paying 9 OV for a undersized 25 goal guy doesn't make any sense at all. He will command around 8-9 million a year and he is only worth 7ish IMO. If he really wants to be in Detroit we can wait a year and sign him as a UFA. Detroit will not be competing for another 2-3 years so, 9 OV> Cat at 8-9 million.

To be fair, a line with Larkin-Raymond will be much better at passing than Pinto-Batherson.

Respectfully,

In his last 3 seasons, he has played at a 38goal pace including this down season. Norris was injured and Cat had to play the whole year with Pinto. You should be fair to a guy who was stapled to the hip of a guy who came into the season with 17 games NHL experience. Would you expect Cat to pot 40 on Berggen's rookie season, in Cat's year with the new team?

Cat does 35 to 40 on DET. Hell, even if you just regress his shooting to career avg he literally a 40 goal scorer again.

Respectfully without Patrick Kane dishing him passes he won't be a 40 goal scorer

I do think DeBrincat-Berggren would be a good pairing as Berggren is a damn good passer; not Kane's level, but good. But, that means he wouldn't be topline. As you said, the '23 draft is better than '22, and as such expectations are higher.
I expect 9OA to be a DeBrincat level guy.

I don't think Cat would be a 40 guy on Detroit unless he's playing with Larkin, in which case we're still a 1 line team and that doesn't seem worth 9oa to me.

Dude just isn't a line driver, I'd rather get a center at 9oa (or trade up to get michkov) than trade for Cat who is a finisher but doesn't drive the play

Each their own. As I've said, I wouldn't be comfortable with trading out 9 for him, but he is a decent goalscorer still and I definitely would expect him to be better than he was this season.

You're using Ras as an example, which is a really poor one. That was a historically weak draft.

Cat is not worth the 9OA this year - simple as that.

Detroit passes, the 9OA pick isn't available for Alex DeBrincat. I'd only move it for either Kyle Connor or Clayton Keller as a starter.

Raymond is our Debrincat. Id Keep 9OA. I would low ball an offer that didnt include a 1st rounder if we even had interest. Personally Id be looking to package 17 & 9 for a Connor if necessary. I just dont feel like Debrincat fits Detroit.

If you look at the multiple reasons as to why Debrincat didn't score as much this season it makes sense.

1. our top centre (Norris) didn't play this season so he had to play with rookie pinto who struggled playing against other top players.
2. the different structure and system of dj smith did not help debrincat score more goals. many fans want Dj gone because of this.
3. TOI and opportunities, with Chicago debrincat played every PP and the complete 2mins of the PP all the time in Chicago because he was their only option with Kane. But with ottawa there are many other players who are competitive and take TOI and PP time on the ice.
4. Really really unlucky this year. I cant tell you how many posts this guy hit this past season in what normally would be a goal for him.

I am 110% confident that Debrincat is a regular 40 goal scorer. I was very impressed with him. He was very clutch scoring important goals which ended up snagging us many points. I wouldn't mind keeping Debrincat at a decent price considering we have other holes to fix. If we do end up trading him it will 100% not be because he didn't score his usual 40 goals in his first year with us, but it will be because he wants to go home or we won't have enough cap to get a goalie if he demands too much because our team doesn't struggle scoring goals, we scored many goals even without our top centre but we do struggle finding consistency in goal.
