The Pens can buyout Granlund for a much lower cost than moving down the 15-ish spots in the draft. Easy pass.

Granlund isn't a top 6 winger. Maybe a middle 6 center.

Almost 1M next year and then 2M for the following 3 years. For a team lookign to win now, better to have an extra 2M in cap space than a slightly better prospect who may only really help in 2-3 years…at which point, the team is even older than it is now.

The Pens would have nearly $25M to work with if they buy Granny out this offseason. For next year, it would essentially amount to another ELC against the cap, and $1M is getting hacked off the Jack Johnson buyout in '23-'24, so the amount of dead cap basically wouldn't change. After that, The cap is going to start going up and the Pens are going to be free of Jeff Carter's cap hit.

The buyout is going to hurt, but not as much as you think it will. That 1st round pick is much better utilized by drafting a player - in a draft like this one, I can see mid-1st guys being only 1-2 years away - or by packaging it for a return that will actually make the Pens' on ice product better. For a win-now team, no Granlund is nice, but no Granlund and a Hanifin or a Hellebuyck/Ullmark would be better. Giving it up to move Granlund is poor asset management.
