Description
Not a Buff fan, but think it makes sense to target someone who is more along the lines of a 1A/1B in net. Vejmelka is both an upgrade on their other non-Levi options and could handle starting if Levi were to falter and need more AHL time, but also doesn't really block him long term if Levi is ready to go and is the real deal.

I think trying to take advantage of another team's cap issues to acquire a partner for Power should be the goal, rather than going through FA with the lack of options. Girard is a bit of a home run swing, lower floor but higher ceiling, and carries a little bit longer deal. This may also not be enough to get CO to pull the trigger, but at least they get a useful and cheaper back to insert into their lineup, a dice roll prospect who if he hits is only a year or two away, and a reasonably high pick as trade ammo. Some other interesting options would be Oliver Kylington, Will Borgen, Sean Durzi, and Calen Addison, who all have varying levels of upside and likely acquisition cost.

That deal for Girard isn’t even close. If the Avs are dealing a defenseman, they’re getting back a middle 6 player.

We don't need Girard, he just doesn't fit. And I'm not sure about this Arizona deal, just not high enough on Vejmelka to pay that price.

No interest in Girard, and I think thats overpaying for Vejmelka, although i like the idea. As far as the other d mentioned, borgen yes, the others all no. Defensive d are needed. We don't need a ppqb, we have two first overall picks for that, and a coach that runs a 4 forward pp. Our own end is a circus, and teams look quite comfortable in the corners and in front.

Exactly

Girard's break out ability paired with Power is exactly what the Sabres could use. He may not clear bodies, but he shuts down in coming offense/ brakes up passes to make up for it. Value in this post isnt there for the Avs.

Yeah I think with Samuelsson and [insert solid DZ-first 6th d-man here] they'll kind of always be able to put together a tough minutes-eating pair. I think Girard or someone of that ilk would be a really interesting partner for Girard. Just really high end transition and skating ability; they should be able to drive play quite well and stay afloat in their own end with Power out there growing into the league.

As far as Girard value, I wasn't totally sure what to do with the Avs cap situation as it is. With the Nichushkin uncertainty, maybe there ultimately won't be a huge need to move anybody, but figured moving Girard was preferable to Toews. To beef up the return, Buffalo could probably change the deal such that instead of the 2nd rounder it's a piece like Krebs or Mittelstadt.

Girard isn't for everyone, but idk that you really need 'defensive D'. Would argue Samuelsson and Lyubushkin are already plenty on that front, and it's more strong transition defenders and players that can drive play that are needed. Maybe not with the tilt Girard has, but maybe they re-work that Nashville deal and go after somebody like Fabbro instead.

So what I see here, is dahlin that was hobbled by a bad coach and weak partners. Samuelsson comes in and frees up dahlin, and it's a different team. I want the same thing for power. Honestly other teams have a very easy time in our zone, corners and the front of our net are safe comfortable places for the other teams forwards. I've been around long enough to know that there isn't any one kind of build that works, I would prefer to get bigger on d. I know that you can win with a guy like makar, but that's a bit disingenuous as he is one of the top probably 5 players in the league. I was looking at a cup preview a few days ago, several front office execs were polled, most of the ones who picked Vegas mentioned how monstrous and talented their d are. I want that. At least to round out dahlin, Samuelsson and power.

No thx, we need a more defensive defender than Girard.

Yeah I can buy that, and some of the direction for a guy they choose may ultimately depend on what they think Power is going to become. If Calgary ultimately decides to try to get younger and reload because they are concerned about being able to re-sign some of their players over the next 12 months, Hanifin could be an interesting target.
