Why would Toronto do this? Leafs get worse as they lose a key Top-6 forward and PP producer. Doesn't make any sense from a cap standpoint either lol - only save $600K this year and next while having $10M+ in dead space and then an unnecessary dead cap hit for two years after the original contract expiry.

Funny how so many Leaf fans think 40 goal 80 point 11m Tavares is grossly overpaid, but 45 goal, 95 point 11.6m Matthews is such as bargain.
Now I do admit I think Tavares is overpaid , but no way is Matthews is deserving to be a second highest paid player in the league.

A buyout doesn’t make sense for the reason listed above. You don’t save enough cap and the buyout lasts twice as long as the remaining years left on his deal. You’re just hurting the cap more than helping it out of a pure opinion on a player.

& hate him or love him, sure he’s overpaid. But he’s still a point per game player that can score and be a net front presence. Which is exactly what the team is looking for in the off-season. So why lose exactly what you’re looking for? He’ll still be productive next season on the wing and can help score goals. Just need to find a centre to play with him.
