Description
This is probably not very realistic but it’s my hopeful and optimistic first try at what a possible retool for this team would look like. Feedback is appreciated.
Notes:
-Laine is the biggest question mark in this equation, it’s less than likely Columbus are willing to part with him, but if Carolina offer a haul of picks it just might tempt a rebuilding Columbus into letting him go. Adding a very talented goal scorer should be target number one for the Canes this offseason, and with a championship in sight I think it’s justified to trade as much picks and prospects as necessary to acquire a guy with Laine’s skill set.
-another difficult part of this would be trading Brady skjei. It will be tough to get a good return for him, as he is a solid but not highly regarded player. I think Philadelphia would be one of the teams willing to pay a high price for him considering their history with acquiring Dmen.
-the other big question mark is acquiring Connor Hellebuyck. As we’ve seen year in and year out I’m the playoffs elite goaltending is an absolute must. Andersen should be resigned and used as part of the deal (or kept as a starter if the deal falls through) and Raanta is now off the books, freeing up just enough money to easily slot in Hellebuyck on his final year of his deal while Kochetkov inherits the full time backup spot. Hellebuyck requesting a trade while being on the last year of his deal means Winnipeg will have little leverage to keep him, but there will be many suitors and a bidding war is likely. Carolina should absolutely attempt to outbid anyone within reason no matter how many picks or prospects it costs. Potentially signing and trading Andersen could help in their bid, if he’s willing.
-Vancouver has been rumoured to want to move Conor Garland immediately to free up cap space, which would be a perfect opportunity for Carolina to add another goal scorer to their middle six. He won’t be free but did have a down year and Canes will have some leverage if Vancouver are serious about getting cap space.
-John Klingberg had quite a down year, giving the Canes a great chance to gamble on overpaying for a skilled offensive defenceman who could be perfect for job of replacing Brady Skjei. His quarterback style of play could help generate offence, especially on the second power play unit and playing next to Pesce in the canes system will help mask his flaws as a defender.
-in order to free up cap and roster space, Noesen and Martinook will be moved while they still have some value.
Zach Aston-Reese and Teddy Blueger will be reunited on the forth line, with their defensive prowess fitting the hurricanes mold perfectly. Admittedly, it may not be possible to poach them from their current teams, but it is certainly a possibility that they hit the market due to cap issues. If one or both of them is not available, keeping Jack Drury and/or Noesen or Martinook in the line up will be necessary.
-the last issue is that this will require multiple players to take team friendly deals. I believe this is possible only because Carolina is a cup contender and many of these players have a lot of loyalty yo the franchise, and will therefore be willing to stay and help the team in hopes of winning a cup. These players (and the reason I believe they will stay) are:
Jordan Staal (captain, long term member, old)
Jesper Fast (bottom 6 forward, payed pretty appropriately, long term member)
Shayne Ghostisbehere (aging third pairing Dman who had a down year and was stuck on coyotes until now)

He seems like the type of guy who Minnesota would trade for lol but yeah the purpose of that was to clear room and cap so he could go anywhere for anything
And it would still work

The reason I chose Philadelphia is because they seem to like trading picks for dmen (Ristolainen and Deangelo trade) but really as long as Carolina gets a decent return that enables them to target laine and/or Hellebuyck it doesn’t matter where he goes, Philly just came to mind.

Flyers laugh and decline. What are they gonna do with a 29 year old LHD in a rebuild? They have 5-6 LHD in the org and want to get younger and stack picks. You did the complete opposite of that in this trade lol

The idea is they could get a late first which will either be used in future trades or make up for capital spent in future trades, and with Klingberg I think he could inject offence to a team that needs it, and as far as his salary goes I’m not sure how many teams will target him in FA so I thought it might be worthwhile to overpay in order to ensure we get the guy, just because they have the money

Moving Skjei is not the answer, and moving him to overpay Klingberg definitely is counterproductive. The Canes don’t need an elite goalie like Helly, they just need whichever of Freddie/Raanta/Koochie to stay healthy. I mean, the Canes were lacking a ton of offense throughout these playoffs, yet in the series against Florida, Florida never ran away with any of the games, as they all ended as 1 goal games. As long as whichever goalie(s) are healthy come playoff time, the defensive system makes up for not having an elite goaltender. Selling off the entirety of future firsts, albeit late picks, is not a good idea, when all you get in return is Laine. Damn good offensive player, but the Canes shouldn’t be looking to acquire 1D players who would be a terrible fit in the system. It’s not like the other trades are any better either. Moving Martinook and Noesen for pennies on the dollar after this year is a mistake, especially with how valuable they have been this year.

I don’t mind the Garland move, as he would be an excellent fit, and he is an analytical darling, so right up the Canes MO. That being said, I don’t think he is the answer. Someone who has a bit more of an edge would be a better acquisition, but Garland would be a decent backup plan. Ghost is not a 3rd pairing guy, he is only playing 3LD on the Canes due to the guys ahead of him. And any thought of him even considering that deal is pure delusion. At minimum, he makes 3mil, and that’s if he is taking a discount. His offense dropped when he arrived in Carolina, but he improved his defensive game tenfold. Not to mention, this year’s LHD UFA class is quite weak, so I could see him getting close to 5mil from a desperate team. Patches is also likely to be ready for training camp, so he won’t be on LTIR, which leads to being over the cap ceiling, with only a 21 man roster. It’s not sustainable. As for Staal, I could see him taking a discount like that to stay with the Canes, but I think he almost certainly gets 2.5-3mil.

Overall, you have destroyed the Canes biggest strengths in their dcore, cap flexibility, and their big pool of future assets. The bottom 6 is a bit better, and also has a bit more bite. The forward core is now completely top heavy, which is something the Canes have been trying to avoid. Klingberg replacing Skjei is a massive downgrade. And whilst Helly is an elite goalie, it makes no sense to make the move for him when the Canes wouldn’t be able to afford him. No cap space, and with the next off season being the time to sign several core members (Aho, Jarvis, Necas, Pesce, and for the sake of argument for this scenario, Turbo and Helly), at least 2 of those pieces have to be let go. And future picks have been sacrificed for 1 year of a cup that still isn’t guaranteed. It’s several steps in the wrong direction.

I hope you understand why I said this was terrible.

Yes i can see why we would maybe trade for him because we have traded for a lot of guys like him in the past but i think we have enough players that do the same stuff he would do, value is there, just not the right team at the moment

Noted. Upon further review, it looks like klingberg was actually a lot worse than I thought. I thought he was still good and just held back by Anaheim’s horrid structure. But it turns out he was actually far and away the biggest problem of all the Anaheim Dmen. But that fact could also be useful.
Also upon further review was that Brady Skjei was more valuable than the eye test showed. So I think I wouldn’t trade him going forward.
About Gostisbehere, I think he’ll have to walk if he wants any serious money, he’s honestly mid and there’s no reason to pay him much just to be on the third pair anyways.
I’d still like to acquire Laine, you can say he’s one dimensional but honestly Carolina needs a guy who can just shoot, plus he still has the physical size to be a decent power forward if he applied himself (unlikely). Also trading for him doesn’t completely destroy the future as he’s still young enough to play for like a decade in Carolina. I am also not really hostile to trading all the picks because the prospect pool is large and they’re in a situation where they won’t really need reinforcement from outside the established prospects and free agency. So I think it’s worth it.
About helle honestly they could stick with Andersen and be fine, but I really feel like he could be special in Carolina.
And about the cap I think they could always trade people if they needed more cap space. Even Hellebuyck could be traded once Kochetkov is ready to start, but having him for 2 years could prove invaluable.
Anyways, I’m going to make another roster taking what I’ve learned and making a more sensical plan. I’ll probably post it tomorrow, see you all soon.
