One way a Marner/Matthews trade makes sense for TOR and the acquiring team is a 3-way trade.

“Tanker” (AZ): takes on futures for a quality roster player and retention

Contender (NSH) trades young roster player and futures gets Marner/Matthews with retention

Toronto gets a couple of roster players and maybe one pick/prospect plus some extra cap space.

It’s not perfect but a team adding Marner/Matthews isn’t going to completely gut its current roster to add them. They’re going to want to compete.

The only other way for Toronto is to trade for pure futures and then turn around and use those futures to acquire players from multiple teams.

Not enough quality. Those players are all decent but nothing special.

Here’s the thing though, this is armchair GM where you can make the value work, you don’t just have to throw together a bad package and say “I know this isn’t good enough”

I should delete the disclaimer as this package is probably good enough. TML fans just don’t want to admit it. Cap space is very valuable.

Certainly is, almost as valuable as the player you’re using the cap space on

Again drivel followed by a correct statement. We don't want to hear it.

Now if only there were another option besides taking hot garbage for marner... like keeping him.
