Description
I see a lot of people trading Murray for the purpose of freeing up cap space, just so we can sign Samsonov to a long-term deal at a similar cap hit. People quickly forget just how bad Samsonov was before this season. Not to mention he's never played more than 42 games in his career. He isn't a reliable starter in my opinion, and signing him long-term could be detrimental to our future cap situation considering the odds of him reproducing the season he just had is very, very unlikely.

On the other hand, I know you can't rely on Murray's availability. I'll say this; after seeing former star goaltenders regress significantly for long periods (Price and Bobrovsky), and then take over once they get an opportunity in the playoffs, call me crazy, but I would keep Murray. Sure, Samsonov will probably give you a better chance of making the playoffs, but he's not a guy that can take you to the promise land. Murray can be that guy, and if he's not, then he walks next off-season. We won't have to spend any assets or lose $2 million against the cap after buying him out.

Putting your trust in Woll is certainly a leap of faith and doesn't feel comfortable, but it isn't too different to how the team has operated regarding their goaltending situation the past couple seasons.

Samsonov is still a fairly young goalie. We have to remember that goalie's take alot longer to develop. He's an RFA and I don't see the leafs signing him for longer than 3 years. Since he's an RFA, the AAV that we sign him to will be fairly low. We're not in a stage where we can hope for next year, we have to make moves right now and signing samsonov is free and could be a good payout for us.

I'm not trying to say Sammy will be bad, he could even get better. But I just don't think he's a goalie that can win the cup. It's way riskier to go with Murray but that's something I'd be willing to risk. If he's healthy come playoff time it'll be our best chance to win the cup.

I'm sure that's what will happen, but how much would you pay Samsonov to be your starting goaltender for 3-4 years? Sammy could very well become just another Jack Campbell, and then we'd be stuck with his contract. At least if Murray's bad we don't have to keep him.

Samsonov was a good goalie and unlike Jack rarely showed issues. He had a 2 week bad stretch with us and in playoffs vs FLA was not 100%

But if we looked at him he was putting up stellar numbers especially at home. Jack meanwhile was awful for large stretches and only had 1 good month with us.

A healthy Sammy is someone u want on this team and with Woll as the backup he will have a reduced workload and should be healthy for us come another playoff run

I got 0 issue paying the guy his worth

Ya know, as a Chicago fan (where Murray keeps getting traded to) I would agree. TOR could just buy him out, the first year isn't bad at all, second year is 2mil and probably manageable. Hawks would probably do just that, buy him out.

I’m not saying he is Jack Campbell. He was (and likely is) a much better goaltender. But we all know goaltending from year-to-year is pretty much a complete toss-up with exception of probably 5/6 goalies. Sammy was never good before this year. What makes you think he can replicate the same season he just had?

My point is that even if he does, and even if he gets better, he’s not a guy that will take you to the cup finals. He just doesn’t have “it”. Matt Murray has “it”, and if we can survive the regular season (without ~20 more games from Samsonov), I’m confident it’ll be worth it.

You never know how good a goalie will be for you until you give him term. Besides you can't seriously think Murray is at all that much better than Samsonov

If I told people 4 weeks ago that Bobrovsky is better than Sammy, people would laugh. When Murray’s been healthy, he has shown flashes of greatness. It’s all about putting him in a position where he can carry us through the playoffs.

I wouldn’t mind that Sammy contract, but a lot of people are saying he’s getting more - somewhere between 4.5-5 for 3-4 years.
