What an awful deal for the Canucks. Matthews may be the best player in the trade, but Pettersson has more value because of team control. Canucks probably don’t give up Hughes for Matthews straight up either

You funny.

Why would the Canucks give up Pettersson, who can be under team control for 9 more years, or Hughes who is signed long term and likely our future captain, for a pending UFA who would be extremely likely to leave after one season?

The Canucks should not sell either of their 2 best young players for a guy who will walk in a year especially when the team isn't contending. Revolutionary.

With Matthews you would be contending. Matthews has made the playoffs every year with the Leafs. Prior to Matthews the Leafs missed the playoff 10 or 11 seasons. Suggesting you wouldn’t trade Matthews 1 for 1 for Peterson or Hughes is laughable. That’s like saying the Leafs wouldn’t trade Matthews for McDavid.

It's not. The leafs have won nothing with Matthews. Nothing. The Canucks are way worse then those Leaf teams too. Canucks trading a top 10 player or a top 10 D man for a rental when they missed the playoffs this year is ridiculous. Matthews is great but Matthews alone isn't making Vancouver a cup winner.

If the leafs sucked, and McDavid was a pending UFA who wouldn't resign, you wouldn't trade Matthews (under team control) for him either.

Matthews is 25 years old and a top 5 player in the league. If he was offered to the Canucks, your GM would drive Peterson and his scrawny arse to the airport.

Does Changing Elias Pettersson out for Auston Matthews give the Canucks 7 more wins? Because that's what it takes to sneak in as second wildcard. Pettersson also has been better in the playoffs then Matthews. I'm not saying the leafs should do it, but 10 years of a top 10 NHL player > 1 year of a top 5 player. This isn't rocket science

Yes. Matthews walks through the regular season. His effort and abilities on defence would embarrass JT Miller to the point he’d have to try. Nobody notices all the details in Matthews game. 60 goals yep. Averaged over 50 goals per 82 since he got into the league. Most goals of any player since he entered the league. Lead forwards in blocked shots. Good on the faceoff dot even though he was battling a wrist injury. 9th in takeawys for forwards dispite plying only 74 games. 6th in shots again only 74 games. 8th xGF. He’s matured from a goal scoring machine to one of the most well rounded forwards in the game.

Yes, I get they didn’t beat FLA. His stat line for the last game was 1 crossbar, 8 shots on goal, 9 hits, 5 blocks, 2 takeaways, and 61% on the dot.

To put it another way, Matthews struggled this year with only 40 goals and 85 points in 74 games. Did I mention he is 22nd all-time in career PPG? I didn’t see Peterson on that list.

Peterson has made the playoffs once in 4 years. Matthews is 7 out of 7 and was PPG this year. Teams change their game plan to cover him.

If Matthews had a few years of term left sure but not when Pettersson is signed long term and Matthews is UFA a year from now.

Not in Vancouver he won't and you can count it he'll have a NMC if he resigns with Toronto.

Well, hypothetically speaking Toronto won’t eveen pick up the phone for a Peterson/Matthews deal. So there’s that too.

He arguably is. Not in the McDavid, Matthews, MacKinnon, Makar, Draisaitl tier. But the tier below them he has a solid case. Incredible both offensively and defensively

Name 25 NHLers better then him. He had the 10th best production in the league and is one of the leagues best defensive forwards.

Is it that hard to understand a bad team isn't selling the future for one year when they wouldn't be that great?
