Byram's deal using custom Contract Comparable tool, prioritizing 8: Signing Age 22, Games Played 91, & Points 43. I selected also (with priority 1): No Arb, Two year deal, RFA. I used Signing Date of 7/1/23 with priority 3. It's clear, without Arbitration, Bo has to take a bridge deal. He'll get Arbitration after next season. The Avs historically don't reward RFAs with durability questions. Bo has high confidence, and will likely be advised to lay it all on the line next season so he can get favorable Arb numbers. His production is way above average compared to similar, young defensemen. Bo should bet on himself, rather than settle for a team friendly deal right now. So, I went with a one year, show me deal, at a higher number than most received in the past.
I also assumed the Avs would like to see how things shake out on defense BEFORE trading a workhorse like G for a top C. The team assembled here is more than capable of making the playoffs, which gives GMCM time to wait for a trade midseason after questions have been answered. There are no immediate holes on this roster (like in years past), and the Avs have historically been patient on making trades only when conditions are favorable to them. IMO they draft BPA, which can still be moved with high value if needed.
Barbashev, I paid a bit more for his Cup pedigree, versatility, and he's having a solid playoffs for VGK. He'd give COL stability and another reason to be patient in the trade market. Both him & ERod could be retained, regardless of what happens with Landeskog next season bc: cap rises, Toews & Frankie expiring deals. He'd also be a good fren for Val.
He had a great season last year, but yes, the Avs have backups if he needs regular season games off. Hunt first, but also 25 yr old former Cornell captain Sam Malinski, who exploded in the AHL. And, I guess MacDermid since he's still under contract, the Avs play him, and still won the division playing him.

To me, he seems like the least likely guy to come back on D. I do think the Avs will keep Girard but Jack Johnson might actually be gone for good. They way I see next year’s lineup on D is:
Toews-Makar
Byram-Manson
Girard-someone (either EJ at 1M or someone random).
Avs injury bug will take some of these guys out and the players you mentioned will get thrown in the lineup for a few games next season.

I've heard EJ wants more of a Ryan Suter type deal. Avs can't afford that. I could see NJ giving him a two year deal if Severson and Graves walk.
This team just ain't the same without Landy. Still lots of talent though.
They won't be a favorite, but are still contenders. GMCM definitely adds a big piece for the playoffs, whether its Landy or someone else. He won't make the same mistake twice.
That’s a lot of faith and money in Barbashev a guy with only 2 40pt seasons who isn’t really a play driver I’d feel really uncomfortable committing $9M long term to Erod and Barbashev.
