Look, I think that DeSmith is typically a pretty solid backup. But nothing more. MAF was Minnesota's 1A this year, he started more than Gustavsson. Casey got worse this year with a bigger role.
Getting more into the stats, from MoneyPuck, MAF had a .909 SV% 6.6 GSAx in 46 games this year. DeSmith had a .905 SV% and 2.9 GSAx in 38 games. GSAx isn't affected by the strength of the team's defense.
Being a 1A doesn't mean he's better. Just starting more games doesn't mean you're better - I think you can understand that. Gustavsson embarrassed Fleury this year too. Desmith didn't get any worse - the play in front of him sucked. He faced high danger shots at a higher rate than any goalie not on Anaheim.
Desmith vs Fleury the last 2 seasons
Save percentage: Desmith .908/MAF .908
GSAA per 60: Desmith 0.09/MAF 0.08
High danger shots per 60: 9.77/MAF 8.16
Money Puck GSAx: Desmith +3.3/MAF -11
Nothing says MAF is better - like I said they're pretty equal - but if you have to make a decision it actually shows Desmith is better.
