IF Jarry Gets One Year Prove It Deal

Description
The new GM comes in and opens up cap space by buying out a couple of Hextall acquisitions (Granlund and Petry). I am not completely against keeping Petry, but I think they would be better off getting younger at the blue line. This opens up the opportunity to land a RHD defenseman in free agency with Severson. Also in this scenario, the GM is unable to find a deal for a goalie this summer and Jarry signs a "prove it" deal. Hill is signed if things go south for Jarry and is Plan B. Maybe with the 2024 trade deadline comes a new goaltender...

Trades:
Minnesota - Dumoulin is out and it's time to acquire a top-four defenseman. A younger and on the rise Joseph + picks go to Minnesota for Middleton. Hopefully his known physical presence pans out for the Penguins.
Winnipeg - DeSmith can be an upgraded/proven backup to Hellebuyck and Pittsburgh receives back a young bottom-six player in Gustafsson who could hopefully have a Poehling type impact.

Other Notes:
- Time to give a young scorer a spot in the top-six and that's Puustinen. Rust brings balance to the third line with the defensive minded Kampf and a solid forechecker in O'Connor.
- Shake up PP1 and PP2. Crosby on PP1 and Malkin on PP2?

I doubt Jarry signs a one year deal just to stay here. He’s a UFA with freedom and will want some sort of security. I can see us bringing him back on a 3 year bridge deal at 4 million per. He can easily get that term elsewhere. I love the idea of signing Hill. He very well could even steal the job. I think we could bring him in at a lower number with that similar 3 year term.

Petry’s play is not that bad to justify buying him out. Though overpaid for his skill set, he is still a solid 2nd pair defenseman. Severson is not worth that number. Zucker will hopefully be brought back in the mid to high 4’s range. Let’s keep in mind that his production during this contract year has been an outlier compared to the rest of his years here.

I’m a big fan of Middleton and his game. I’m just not sure he’s worth what you’ve proposed. I suppose I’d be willing to move Joseph for him being that we have Pickering brewing in the AHL, but I’m not sure about the value you laid out. Interesting proposal for sure. We could certainly use a guy like Middleton.

What do you think Severson's next contract will be?

It depends on the caliber of team that he signs with, but I can’t see his cap hit being over 5 million.

One last opinion needed, Severson or Dumba?

LOL. I am personally over him and think there could be long-term health issues with him but I can see a scenario where he stays.

I suppose Severson for size and injury reasons, but I’d much rather spend the money elsewhere rather than at right D. Two more years of Petry is not horrible. He can still play, just makes too much. His play is not bad enough to justify buying him out while we also (please dear god I beg of you) buy out Granlund. Also, it doesn’t make sense to lose assets to move Petry. Guy makes a bit too much, but he’s a fine d man.

I wouldn't buy out Granlund or Petry. Both could be traded for a return if the Pens eat salary.

Fair. Their analytical numbers are good / ok. Well worth a medium pick if they weren't overpriced.

But to your point, it takes two to tango
