Just my thought on the "blocking trades". Gotta think players would include teams with lots of cap (generally bad teams) so they can't be dumped there.
Arizona....the rink and the worse travel schedule in the league
Lots of players don't appreciate the Winnipeg/Edmonton/Calgary weather and travel.

I also think many players don't want to go back to their former teams as well.

And that American players on American teams almost certainly don't want to be traded to a team based in Canada.

Oh, I don't think being on a Canadian team is a big issue. I think it's more geograhical. Winnipeg/Edmonton/Calgary are kinda isolated cities for lots of people. Vancouver might be a problem for any East Coast resident. Montreal might be a problem for schooling and spouses employment due to work. Ottawa, an out of playoff team. Toronto, I don't think is problem.

Players that can have trade clauses have to be of UFA status so they are older players. Older players, more settled, families. Also more people live east of the Mississippi, to travel to some Western Conference times can be daunting. Players travel schedules and the ability of friends and family to visit

Just my thought. If I was player (I am prized RHD), the Metropolitan division would be my choice. Simple travel, much more free time.
