Because of the NMCs GM Chuck Fletcher has handed out to Koivu, Parise, Pominville, and Suter...he has the Wild in a crappy situation. He brags about it being a complement to the talent he has amassed, but that is an absolute insult to any fan with half a brain! HE has screwed this franchise into the ground with the ridiculous contracts he has negotiated. So...fire Fletch, hire me...and this is how I would fix his problem... I would use the 8 skaters and one goalie option and protect (the 4 have-to's) Koivu, Parise, Pominville, Suter, and then I would protect Brodin, Dumba, Spurgeon, and Neiderrieter...and trade Mikael Granlund for expansion exempt parts. I would take my chances with Coyle, Zucker, Staal, Scandella, Haula, etc...accepting the fact that I'm only going to lose one. The Wild have WAY more organizational depth at forward than they do on the blue line, so this makes the most sense.
All of this is done on the assumption that no NMCs were waived, and Pominville could not be traded prior to the expansion draft.
Because of his contract and versatility, Vegas selects Charlie Coyle in the expansion draft...and probably flips him out east for prospect/s or pick/s.
Dallas goes all in on offense. FWIW, this trade is mostly an example of the trade to be made with Granlund. The Wild need expansion exempt players and/or picks. The return for Granlund would be very significant.
If Coyle is left unprotected and not traded for at least a draft pick minimum, which I guarantee a team having interest in that, this is the worst idea I've ever seen.
You know what would make more sense? Buyout Pominville. Take on the cap penalty for a 4 years but keep arguably one of your best players whose young and in his prime.
I don't understand this logic of its better to lose one player for nothing than to trade 2 players for cheap assets.....Yeah you lose 3 players as opposed to only 1 but you'll have added assets that in turn will replace the 3 assets lost. Not to mention the cap saving that can be used in the immediate term with UFA's until those assets turn into full time NHL'ers.
A Wild fan admitting how terrible Chuck Fletcher is makes this a truly great day He was made a lot of really bad trades, given out a lot of really bad contracts, and as you mentioned given out all these NMC's. Realistically, it shouldn't have been this difficult to maneuver the expansion draft- trade Nino for an expansion exempt defensman, trade Dumba for expansion exempt forward, and then they don't lose a critical player for nothing- Maybe that's easier said than done.
If Wild lose one of Dumba or Brodin for nothing to Vegas, Fletcher should be fired immediately!!!

Coyle is not a player I WANT to lose, but the fact is, the Wild can absorb the loss of him better than they can a defenseman. They have a plethora of highly-touted forward prospects knocking at the door, but almost nothing in the way of NHL-caliber defenseman in the system. This is the reason I would make the decision to expose more forwards and risk losing Coyle or Zucker or Staal.
