Good with Varly on a short deal. Man do I hate Holl's game though. I know the UFA market for RHD is weak, but damn I hope we do better than that.

Zadina can easily be traded on the premise of a reclamation project. He's still better than most of our 4th liners.
But I think it's best we hold out and not actively shop him and hope he hits his stride before the youth comes and actively take spots

Both most likely. He was known for goalscoring in a league where goals are a dime a dozen.
I think if you were to ask most Wings fans pre-draft that year who'd we rather have; Hughes or Zadina, ~70% would've said Hughes.

Perfect storm - dropped in the draft, making him play with a chip on his shoulder, but not the good kind, then rookie year Covid happened and then Blashill DESTROYED him by massively mismanaging him... then, injuries. Poor guy is cursed.

I'd rather have Mayfield then Holl, Holl isn't that great of a 2nd pairing RD. We need someone a lot better than him.

I mean our LHD were old and cruddy. Zadina, as promising as he was, is in a less important position than Hughes is lol.

I mean as much as I hate seeing Pens' mock trades, Jeff Petry would be a near perfect interim 2 RHD while we wait for A) Anton Johansson or B) A different drafted RHD (from maybe this draft).
He isn't that bad, he just isn't worth 6M. This team, as good as our prospects may be, will likely not be competitive next year until we get that top-line winger and goaltending situation solved.
Goaltender situation is obviously growing (Cossa), but we still don't have that #1 LW to pair with Larkin and Raymond.
LW can be assessed this draft, but Yzerman loves letting his players grow, so we wouldn't reap benefits next season [or probably the next-next season too].

Obviously, we would also get some sweeteners. I would love it if Stevie managed to crack a deal that involves Petry + '23 1st for some depth or middling prospect.

I'd rather have Holl than Petry, he's declining fast and my hot take is that he'll be healthy for MAYBE 50% next year

Maybe some time in Europe to regain confidence is due. No point in another nhl team trying him unless a team like SJ would give him Top six time with a competent C like Hertl. Is he playing 4th line minutes this year?

Mostly, yes... I really think he just needs a change of scenery. I think he'd explode in Carolina personally

I'm looking at it from a perspective of; we're going to be a team that'll be happy to just make the wildcard next season. Managing to grab that 1st from Pittsburgh in this year's draft would do absolute wonders for this team in the long run. Jeff Petry is old and has a big contract, but we'll have the capspace and the contract ends in '24-'25, which I think is when the team will actually become a contender.

Well, yea, if Pit pays to move him like that, of course you do it, but there's no chance they're giving up a first to move him

Obviously it'll have to include a sweetener.
Something like Mastrosimone + a 4th or whatever for Petry + a 1st. Pittsburgh's prospect pool blows, they could use about almost anybody.

I'd be happy to have Varlamov on a 1-2 year deal around 4mil per. That'd give Detroit two proven NHL goalies for the next two years with less than 9mil in cap hit total while Cossa spends that time in GR developing. Once those contracts expire, the hope is Cossa should be ready.

I'm fine with Varly but I think he'll take a paycut to stay on the Island and backup his buddy Sorokin. He seems quite happy there.

Zadina lit up the Q and was ranked #3 by most draft publications behind Dahlin and Svechnikov. Sens stole Tkachuk at #4 after the Habs took Kotkaniemi. They really wanted a C. Coyotes took Hayton at #5 and Holland took Zadina at #6. Canucks were gifted Quinn Hughes at #7.

I was shocked because the Red Wings biggest need was on D and we had our choice between Hughes, Bouchard and Dobson. Zadina just hasn't panned out. He works hard. He's become a good 200 foot player. He creates some offense but he was drafted to score goals and he scores about once a month.

Man looking back now it doesn't hurt as much since we have Edvinsson as our #1 LD of the future (not to say I'd rather have him than Hughes, we'll have to see about that), but man at that time it was awful. Idk how our drafting was so bad under Holland (even in the later rounds you'd expect more than like Hronek to hit).

Have Yzerman fired any north american scouts from the Holland era? Detroits first round picks from 2015 to 2018 have not panned out. Seeing how Holland have drafted in Edmonton I guess its not all their fault.
