Équipe: 2023-24 Sabres de Buffalo
Date de création initiale: 23 mars 2023
Publié: 23 mars 2023
Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
Sabres are 5-27-4 when they score less than 4 goals. I agree with Adams patience, but he owns the goaltending failure. Time to see what this team can do with even league average goaltending.

Savoie over kulich because savoie cant go to AHL. Kulich will still play plenty of NHL games this year.

Agreement between Canadian Jr leagues and the NHL says they have to be 20 to play in AHL. Sometimes foreign leagues loaned players to OHL teams like Alex Nylander, which is why he played as underage.

Ahh. That stinks for Kulich, unless they can move Olof, and have a 3rd Line of: Mitts, Savoie, Kulich.

Flames aren't going to free up cap by going from Weegar to Jokiharju.

Id be wary of taking a goalie from Carolina where shot quality against is favourable and they are very good at limiting the number of rush chances they concede. We are more or less the exact opposite team.

He's played elsewhere too, like Toronto.

I blame our goalies more than our defense

That was like 3 years ago lol Surely you wouldnt sign a goalie off that premise.

Also, his tenure in Toronto ended terribly when he couldnt handle playing in front of an offense heavy team so..

.914 svp in toronto. He's only been gone from there for 2 years

If our goalies had a .900 svp we'd be in the playoffs. Not trading the farm for a goalie, picking a ufa goalie

He's not that goalie any more. The bulk of what drives the 914 save percentage happened before the 19-20 season. After that it was .909, then .895

Not wanting to trade the farm for a goalie isn't a good reason to sign a guy who hasn't played well in a rush heavy system since pre covid.

You are welcome to share you wisdom one of these days on what the Sabres should do in goal. It's easy to just dump on people

I actually have often but it gets overlooked cause ppl just want to dunk on me reminding them how this team operates.

But to answer your question. They've got 2 options. Either swing big for an established goalie, or use the analytics department to find two goalies who, even if they dont have flattering stats, at least show the ability to handle a large volume of rush chances against.

You cant go in half way with goaltending. Guys like freddy and talbot carry the same risk as any other mid FA goalie. you dont really know what youre going to get. They need to go after big fish, overpay if you have to. Thats the whole point of stockpiling picks and prospects, is that you are in a position to do this without breaking your team. If a top end guy isnt available, then get creative. Look at teams that play a similar style as the Sabres and see if their goalies have underlying numbers that suggest they may be able to handle what happens here.

You asked me what the sabres should do in goal. I literally just typed out two paragraphs lmao. Did you want a specific name? you should have said that instead.

Hellebuyck, Saros, Swayman are my top 3 choices. I think helly wants out of canada/wpg, give them whatever they want if he agrees to an extension. Before you say it, couldnt possibly care less what this means for levi. Im not saying no to acquiring one of the best goalies in the world to make a guy who might someday 6 years from now be almost as good, happy. Saros may become available depending on what NSH plans are for askarov. Swayman likely wants to get out from Ullmark's shadow, might be the most realistic of the three. Id add Hart in that list as well but I dont actually know how true those rumours are.

As far as the second tier goes? I haven't done the full research into it yet but Stolarz is an interesting option as part of a 1a/1b tandem. I dont think he can handle more than 35 ish starts so theyd have to find another guy who profiles similarly.

I'd be interested in a big name too. Just don't feel like the blow back from posters here saying demko costs like owen power. Him or saros would be fine by me. Hellybuck if he had term

In fairness, its because sabres fans here are notorious for trying to deal some combo of UPL, Jokiharju and a 2nd for Demko. Obviously, nobody expects the cost to be power, but its going to be players that they dont like moving because thats how it works.

I've posted a few ACGM with the idea of Markstrom as an option for Buffalo and would like both of your opinions, if you would be so kind. Granted he is having a down year and carries $6m/year for three years, but he has a strong track record and is 33 so while he isn't too old and can still play a few years, he doesn't necessarily block Levi if he becomes what we all hope he is. Plus you won't have to give up too much to get him as Calgary would probably like to shed his contract.

There are other goalies putting up similar numbers to markstrom who cost 1/3 what he does and wont cost a lot to trade for if they aren't free agents. Unless they are swinging big, they should be getting low AAV/term goalies who may have upside and spending the rest of the money on forwards/d-men.

Dont need to be paying a backup 6 mil when all the ELC guys extensions kick in.

I appreciate both of your opinions. I can't imagine they run it back with a combination of Comrie, Devi, and UPL, but you never know.
