Varlomov is so much better than samsonov. if you want varly 50% retained it would cost a second and a third and samsonov. But the leafs don’t have that so target another goalie

-I don't get this offer. Samsonov has been arguably better than Varly (.915 SV%/2.39 GAA vs. .914/2.68), and even with the retention Varlamov costs $700K more. The only real advantage Varlamov has over Samsonov is playoff experience, but it's not like you don't have Matt Murray sitting their with a pair of Cup rings as the other half of your goalie tandem. Personally, I'd make the deal from the Isles side because it saves some cap and worst case, we can shop Samsonov this summer if he doesn't want/is too pricey to be Sorokin's backup going forward.

-Holl & Jarnkrok would be minimally valuable to a Detroit team in sell mode - Holl is a pending UFA, and Jarnkrok will be playing out his age-32 through -34 seasons on that contract. The 1st is something, sure, but that would basically get you Bertuzzi with full retention by himself (barely) - so what's the value you're giving for Sundqvist with retention?

Samsonov: 32 GP, 2.39 GAA, .915 sv%
Varlamov: 20 GP, 2.68 GAA, .914 sv%

This would not be a smart trade for Toronto, especially since Sammy is an RFA after this year and Varly is 8 years older.

Thats a very fair take. What's Sundqvist's value w retention? Adding in McMann and a 4th rounder seems reasonable to meet considering you can probably flip Holl another 4th rounder
