Description
---Kulikov is coming off a bad year, I think that he could bounce back and on a two year "show me" contract he could prove worth and extension down the line, at his age he fits well with this group. Problem could be other teams out bidding that term.

---I think Smith is a good fit for two years while Gilles and Parsons develop. While Johnson has another kick at the can to push an aging goalie for a job.

---I don't think this is flashy but I think it improves our team, would be nice to find a top line RW but I think Ferland has earned a shot and with more depth in Bennett, Lazar, Jankowski all able to play the wing and center, they shouldn't hesitate to give those guys a shot if Ferland isn't performing.

---Some nice pieces could be flipped at the deadline for a top RW if we are in that position ie. Kylington, Rittich, Bouma, possibly Ferland, I would love to make the big moves now but I believe we need to see how the season plays out then decide when we go big with our prospect pool.

I like Smith, but I think ARI may be hesitant to move him within the division

I don't disagree with that, I do think though, that Calgary with the conditional possibly being a first is paying a fairly steep price for a goalie with two years left on potentially his last contract. I think Arizona with new ownership will be ready to take a new direction making Smith more available than previously before.

That conditional 1st for Smith would need to be more like: 1) Smith plays > 40 games during regular season, 2) Smith has a Top 10 SV% during regular season, 3) CGY makes it to second round of playoffs, Smith plays >50% of games during playoffs

With younger options out there, it's not worth overpaying for Smith, even if he has shown he can face a lot of pucks and stop them pretty well. He's 35, you've mentioned his contract price and length, etc. My preference is to add a goalie who might be around for a bit longer than 2 years and will still have asset value in 3-4 years when (hopefully) one of Gillies, Rittich, or Parsons is ready to start at the NHL level. A younger guy today who can play NHL minutes is a hedge on CGY's internal candidates not developing into a starter, plus a hedge on future value of the goalie paid for today (with picks/prospects) if one of the internal guys works out.

I like that thought as well, if we get a guy like Grubauer or Raanta and they come over play lights out we can extend them and then one of those three young prospects become a great trade asset!
