That conditional 1st for Smith would need to be more like: 1) Smith plays > 40 games during regular season, 2) Smith has a Top 10 SV% during regular season, 3) CGY makes it to second round of playoffs, Smith plays >50% of games during playoffs
With younger options out there, it's not worth overpaying for Smith, even if he has shown he can face a lot of pucks and stop them pretty well. He's 35, you've mentioned his contract price and length, etc. My preference is to add a goalie who might be around for a bit longer than 2 years and will still have asset value in 3-4 years when (hopefully) one of Gillies, Rittich, or Parsons is ready to start at the NHL level. A younger guy today who can play NHL minutes is a hedge on CGY's internal candidates not developing into a starter, plus a hedge on future value of the goalie paid for today (with picks/prospects) if one of the internal guys works out.
