Description
Man I have no idea if this is enough. If the Caps are going to go for a big swing, though, this is the only one I'd want to see them make.

Thinking:
- Mantha is the obvious odd man out on the Caps, but still has a high ceiling and great underlying metrics. Could take Meier's current spot on the Sharks and likely produce well.
- Sheary won't be re-signed by the Caps, but again, has a high ceiling and has produced well in top-6 roles on multiple teams. Sheary + Mantha is likely still less than what Meier would be paid next year.
- Lapierre is one of the Caps' top prospects and could play for the Sharks next season in Bonino's spot.
- Snively has shown the ability to produce at the NHL level, but faces a logjam and thick-headed coach in DC. Can replace and upgrade on Svechnikov in San Jose.
- Gustafsson has played very well this year, showed a high offensive ceiling, and can ease some of the Sharks' burdens in that respect if they do in fact trade Karlsson (please do not read this as me putting them on even remotely the same scale - I said *some* of the burdens). Could easily be replaced with Jensen if the Sharks valued him more.
- 1st and 3rd picks. Maybe I'm going too hard on the player/prospect side, but I think five players that can jump in now and next season plus a middle-to-high 1st in this year's draft and a 3rd round sounds more than fair.

Homerism counter:
- Personally, I want the Caps to hold on to Mantha, Lapierre, Snively, and Jensen. I don't think they *can* hold on to Sheary or Gustafsson even though they have been great fits. I don't view these as dump-offs like Eller or NAK.
Transactions
SJS
  1. Gustafsson, Erik
  2. Lapierre, Hendrix
  3. Mantha, Anthony
  4. Sheary, Conor
  5. Snively, Joe
  6. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (WSH)
  7. Choix de 3e ronde en 2024 (WSH)
Détails additionnels:
Gustafsson could also be Jensen - but EG has done well this year, and his offense might be more valued by the Sharks.

Lottery protected 1st rounder. If the Caps's pick is top-3, then it becomes the 2024 1st rounder.

I really don't think a move like this is worth while. Even with Meier, this team most likely doesn't make it out of the 1st round. I'd rather just sell off pieces now and get a jumpstart on building post Ovi.

Sharks have no interest in any of the roster players and theirs not enough value for future assets at all

To be honest, this seems to be a lot of stuff San Jose doesn't want, mixed in with one or two pieces of note.

Mantha is someone who could be awesome yes, but I doubt a team still years out and in the midst of a rebuild would want Mantha in place of picks/prospects.
Same for Mantha with Sheary, but with a lower ceiling and even less incentive for San Jose since he's a UFA to be and will likely have a team or two willing to overpay based on production alone.
Same x3 for Gustafsson, he's produced really well in DC but he's also 30 with an expiring contract, I highly doubt a rebuilding team would look at him as a long term replacement over their prospects.
Same x4 with Snively, who looks great in small samples but realistically maxes out at a 3rd liner and is also 27, he'd only block San Jose from playing better prospects.

All of the guys I just listed (minus Snively probably) could get you decent returns from other contenders, but a rebuilding team like San Jose is likely uninterested by older wingers and defense, especially when they can hunt for players similar to Sheary, Gustafsson, Snively in free agency if they really want to.

Lapierre, the 1st, and the 3rd could all be pieces that San Jose would actually consider, but given the supposed asks from New Jersey and Carolina, Washington would have to add at least another strong prospect (ex. Miroshnichenko, Chesley) or another 1st round pick to maybe get themselves in the conversation, and I don't see Washington taking a risk like that with the playoff situation the way it is currently.

That's a wonderful breakdown. I don't think the Caps would mortgage too too much of the future, so you're probably right (and as I frankly suspected), there almost certainly isn't a trade there that makes sense for both teams.

I agree. The closest I've come up with in terms of a trade would probably Lapierre, Johnson, Gibson, a 1st, and probably something else, since Washington has no expendable prospects at the level of Holtz, for example. Meier is an interesting thought but I just don't think Washington is a trade fit, unfortunately.
