no im saying that if karlsson was making 6 million or even 9 million. this deal is auto, but the fact he's making 11.5 is absurd. he's never gonna be back to this pace again.

Of course, then we're in agreement. I don't think a single person thinks a deal could happen with out retention.

My point is that theres a sliding scale of the return depending on how much is retained. it's gotta be at least 2 mil for Edmonton to even figure out the money for it, and in that case the return wouldnt be that great since it's still a fairly high cap hit for them. On the other side, if SJ is retaining 4+ then they should be getting a HUGE return since Edmonton is now getting this incredible player at only 5.75-7.5 mil.

I think retention of 2.5-3.5 is the only realistic range where a deal could happen.

yes I agree, but it just seems unrealistic to me because either needs a heavy retention or the oilers to pay a lot. I just don't see it happening
