My point is that theres a sliding scale of the return depending on how much is retained. it's gotta be at least 2 mil for Edmonton to even figure out the money for it, and in that case the return wouldnt be that great since it's still a fairly high cap hit for them. On the other side, if SJ is retaining 4+ then they should be getting a HUGE return since Edmonton is now getting this incredible player at only 5.75-7.5 mil.
I think retention of 2.5-3.5 is the only realistic range where a deal could happen.</div></div>

yes I agree, but it just seems unrealistic to me because either needs a heavy retention or the oilers to pay a lot. I just don't see it happening

no im saying that if karlsson was making 6 million or even 9 million. this deal is auto, but the fact he's making 11.5 is absurd. he's never gonna be back to this pace again.

he's having an elite season, he's an unreliable player. just saying its not smart for the p=oilers to add the cap hit. if they can add EK at a lesser cap hit sure I love it. it scares me though with him being 32, hard to keep this pace up at older age for some people. if he's half of what he is this year the next three, make the trade. but San Jose will have to retain like 5.5 million to make a deal with the oilers. and obviously thats not what San Jose is going to do. I think he's an elite d man again, but let's look at it as unbiased fans. he's elite, but will not contribute at this pace again. if he does I will eat my shorts.

Every other year is above that. He's healthy and 100% now and dominating in San Jose. If he can get 110 points in San Jose then imagine him with Mcdavid and Drai. It's 100% worth the price.</div></div>
except for when he's 32, and hasn't done anything close to this in his 13 year career. I agree it would be prime time Tv. I want him on the oilers. but at this price is so high. hoping he lives up to his price every year is scary when he hasn't lived up to his price in 5 years until now.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sleeparc</b></div><div>Nothing about this year is a fluke. He has elite counting stats but also elite micro stats. He showed flashes of it last year too before injury. Most defenseman in this era after not point per game, in fact not even Josi, Makar or Fox are PPG. What Karlsson is doing this year is unprecedented since Paul Coffey was playing, it's incredible. Even his defensive stats are very high end this year, he's in the top twenty in defensive advanced stats this year. If he stays healthy going forward Karlsson at around 8-8.5 mil a year is an absolute bargain. No PP in the league could even touch Edmonton's.</div></div>
I agree with you. but he's 32. of you think he's gonna do this for another 4 years when he hasn't done anything even close to it yet in his 13 year career?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>AStovetop</b></div><div>There's 3.75 Mil retained here. You'd have Karl at a 7.75 which is absolutely insane value, even for his age. And you have to put his past point production in context. He was putting up near point per game seasons when the leagues top scorers had sub 100 points. He's not only on pace to break point per game, he's on pace to break 110 points.
And yes this is his first season of having consistent health in the past 5+ years, and he looks great. His last injury was a broken finger from a blocked shot, not a high ankle sprain or recurring shoulder issue so the injury issues are way overblown.</div></div>
yes almost 10 years ago when Jamie Benn won the Art Ross in 2015.... how are you comparing 10 years ago on a 32 year old hahaha. yes I compared the last 2-3 years. since he's been in his 30s. since he's been on the 11.5 mil contract. and yeah I agree getting him at 7.5 is unreal value, but we have a 9.25 Defenceman. I think people think his value is much higher than it actually is. im all for the oilers making a move. im sick of holland sitting around doing nothing and being a few pieces short of a potential Stanley cup appearance last year. but Idk about adding an expensive, injury prone, 32 year old Defenceman, who's having an almost fluke year, with 4 years left on his contract.

such an over pay for kalrsson. people forget he's a 32 year old, making 11.5 mill for the next 4 years. oilers have to resign drai and mcdcvid in 3-4 years. do you want a 36 year old EK eating their salary and losing them in FA?? KArlsson had 22 points 2 years ago. karlsson hasn't played a full season since 2015. karlsson has NEVER been above a point per page in his career until this year. he's 32. im all for going all in... but far better options than EK at a way cheaper contract

I would dare say Thompson is "untradeable" as well. What ever that means in a discussion of trading him.
At 7.1 mil a year i have a lot for flexibility and few less goals than i do with mcdavid as things stand.
I noticed McDavid doesnt have a cup ring, perhaps thats because the team is more important than one player. I also noticed that teams have won cups without Mcdavid so its possible. I'll keep my 6 great players you can keep your 1. Best of luck.</div></div>

the details on cap friendly are garbage. sorry for all the mistypes. crIstall is the basically he guy I think climbs the board the most. he is a wizard with the puck. I think he's the best draft eligible playmaker in the WHL maybe CHL. and he scores, scores some unreal goals. one against swift current right before Christmas was an insane shot. his skating and size are his biggest knocks. he is young, insanely raw but elite. he gets skating with NHL skating coaches and I think he will have a great career in the NHL. and size is the same thing they said about Canfield, Hughes, etc. size doesn't matter anymore its not he 80's anymore

why do some oiler fans want karlsson so bad? this is the first year in a while he's worth the money. before this season it was one of the worst contracts in the NHL. we don't need another scoring piece, have to get Playoff defence man that will keep the puck out of the net. broberg and barrie are the two best puck moving defence man on the roster. keep them and build the other 4 with gapped tough DFD
