Description
1. Similar value to the Tarasenko trade.
2. A late pick to take on less than $70k in cash.
3. In 2 years on the market, nobody has met AZ's ask so instead of them lowering their ask, they keep money back and get a first, 2 first round prospects and a decent player.
4. Depth piece, could be someone else entirely.

This is one way to load up. I'm not convinced Chychrun is the right fit or worth that return, but with another 2 years on his deal he could be traded to recoup assets. I'd offer ROR the Kane deal (4 x $5.125M) in the summer.

Doubt ARI is going to retain on both Chychrun and ROR for EDM's sake. At least without some good compensation.

Anyone could be the third team for the ROR retention, but a 7th is about the right compensation. It's less than $70k in actual cash.

I feel like I explained the Chychrun trade well enough to answer your comment already. They've been asking a high price for Chychrun for like 2 years, and nobody has met the ask. They can either (a) reduce their ask to match what someone is willing to pay, or (b) maintain their ask and offer to retain salary as a means of making the deal more attractive to buyers. This trade explores the second option, the compensation is sufficient: a first, 2 recent first round prospects and a decent player.

To be fair it's not like they've been in a hurry to do any sort of trade. I think they've just been waiting for the right offer, but it has yet to be manifested. No question Chychrun's injury-proniness is one of the reasons to that. That being said, the value here is fine for Chychrun in my opinion - just not with a retention.

Also almost two million dollars worth of retention has been worth around a 3rd or 4th round pick in the past. SJ got a fourth for retaining $1,375M of Foligno's salary, and a fifth for retaining $1,125M of Janmark's salary. Plus we've seen throughout the season that teams value the cap more than in the past - there is multiple trades to prove that point.

Expecting a retention of $1,875M being worth only a 7th is hella optimistic.

This offer is similar to what the reported ask is for Chychrun - the ask that NOBODY is willing to pay. So in order to move him they either need to reduce the ask or somehow sweeten the pot to entice buyers to meet the ask. This trade explores the latter idea.

The cost to retain is based on actual dollars though, not cap hit. That's where you erred, you're calculating the wrong thing. O'Reilly's actual salary this year is $1M, so if you're asking someone to retain 25% of that for 25% of the season, that works out to just $62,500 in actual dollars, the compensation for which a 7th round pick is reasonable.

Let's look at your own examples:
    - in 20-21 Janmark's salary was $2.25M. San Jose retained 25% for 25% of the season which cost them $140,625 in real dollars, and received a 5th round pick.
    - Foligno was earning $5.5M that year. San Jose retained 25% for 25% of the season which cost them $343,750 in real dollars, in return for a 4th round pick.

They have pulled Chychrun from the lineup and have stated that he's not playing again pending a trade. They are committed to making something happen now, knowing that his value diminishes if they wait until summer. Having him for 3 playoff runs is more valuable to buyers than having him for 2.

Just the fact that ARI is holding Chychrun out from the lineup until a trade is done suggests me that they have received offers very close to what they believe to be acceptable.

This is a valid point you make here, but I still do believe that teams will value both the cap space they have as well as retention spots a little more than this. The lack of previous examples also makes it harder to foresee whether the teams value the actual dollars or the amount of cap retained.

Not necessarily. We'll undoubtedly see this once the trade happens.

Whoever of the GMs find their chances to compete now might blink on it.

Elliotte Friedman also reported that he’s heard there’s nothing close yet regarding a Chychrun trade.

Frank Seravalli reported the Coyotes could be willing to retain salary on Chychrun to facilitate a trade.

I never said ARI wouldn't be willing to retain salary.

I said they would require a compensation for it.

I mean, you could literally just read the link I posted:

If the Coyotes are willing to retain salary, Seravalli believes it could help them get the asking price they’ve been seeking for Chychrun. He also believes it would interest “a whole swath of teams”.

They aren't going to get their initial ask plus MORE for retaining, the retention is to entice a team to meet their initial ask. I believe my proposal is entirely reasonable in that regard.
