TSN really didn't put too much thought into this, this would likely be a terrible trade for both sides. They really want Dubas to make a desperation move and Grier to lack the patience on making reasonable deals.
Toronto:
Pros:
-Get two elite players for one for one playoff run
-Get Meier for a 2025 1st+Niemela+Minten and could probably get a 2023/24 1st+a B-prospect for him at the draft
Cons:
-Essentially are trading Nylander for Karlsson (who is a luxury) and will probably be worse off than the Hall for Larsson trade which didn't pan out for EDM in the short-term and was arguably a lose-lose trade for both sides in the long run.
-Will have 2 holes in the top 6 instead of one next season.
San Jose:
Cons:
-Retaining an extra million on Karlsson for no gain
-Trading Karlsson for Minten, Niemela, 2025 1st. Not bad in terms of prospects, but neither are great for the pick to be so distant.
-If SJ trades Nylander in the following season, they might get less out of him than they could from Meier considering Nylander would have a 10-team no-trade list.
Pros:
-Trading Meier for Nylander if they trade Nylander now. This is a potential pro (that could turn into a con) that depends on the offers for Meier from teams like NJ and Buf, who would be able to extend him. The frontrunners for Nylander would be the contenders who have some interest in adding Meier as a rental. Teams like NJ and Buf could be interested but they likely would offer something similar or less to what they are offering for Meier since they would have no idea what Nylander wants in terms of an extension. SJ will have used up all their retention slots on Burns, Karlsson, and Meier, so the return on Nylander could be diluted by bringing in a 3rd team to retain his ~7m AAV for 2 years. If Boston or Tampa (although they probably don't have as much in assets to offer) can find a way to fit him then that would be a major con for the Leafs.
Conclusion: This trade is set up for a lose-lose situation unless the Leafs end up winning the cup.
