One or multiple players with salary at or exceeding ~$4.4M would have to be in LTIR for the entire season or you’d be above the cap. Trading for a guy on LTIR will not help you get under the cap. If Sweeney is smart, his leverage is waiting out Pasta right up to free agency. Pasta has publicly stated his love for the city and his desire to re-sign, so the closer he gets to free agency, the more pressure builds that there's a real possibility he'll need to move from a city he's lived in for a number of years now and has called home.

$10.5M is market value for 100+ point wingers, and he'll still become the highest paid Bruin in history. Obviously a good agent will try to get the best contract for his player, and a good GM will get the best contract for the team, but it ultimately comes down to the player with the final say. And I think we'll see a similar situation like Forsberg and NSH, both sides will hold out until close to free agency but ultimately come to a deal that is fair for both sides.
