Both teams decline the first trade. Canucks have a younger, better version of Rielly in Hughes. Rielly is more important to the Leafs than Horvat would be

Why would Toronto trade a player they just signed to a 8 yr contract with a full NMC a year after signing him.

Yes Rielly has defensive flaws but Toronto has been elite defensively and can start him in the o-zone far more with excellent play from Sandin, Liljegren, Giordano, Brodie and Holl.

Half right, Rielly has far better advance stats than Hughes this season. The known fact that Hughes is better is based entirely on anti leaf bias. Leafs decline that in a second.

Thinking Chychrun is worth more than Rielly is so laughable.

Rielly is grossly underrated.

Doesn't justify the Canucks acquiring yet another 7+ million dollar LHD who doesn't actually make our defense better...

Rielly most definitely makes your defence better. He's light-years better than OEL and as I have said and backed up with actually evidence, he's better defensively than Hughes

So you think that it is a smart decision to add another 7+ million dollar LHD? That would mean that we are committing 25% of our cap space on 3 LHD. Doesn't seem very smart to me. That means no matter what, we are going to have a 7 million dollar third pairing LHD. Reilly isn't a stay at home defenseman. He doesn't fill a need. Just because he is better defensively than a pilon like OEL, doesn't mean that he is actually very good defensively. Canucks don't need him. We don't even have the cap space for this deal

What I think is smart for the Canucks to do is rebuild. Move everyone you can who isn't 25 or under and not named Hughes or Petterson. Move Horvat, Miller, Garland, Boeser, Schenn, and anyone else you can move. Plan to be on the rise once OEL is off the books and then you can likely have a team to be proud of.

Oh cool, a logical statement. Could have led with that

I have said so for a 3 years. The bubble success was the worst thing that could have happened to you. Gave false hope. The team wasn't good then and has gotten worse. Benning was the 2nd worst GM in recent memory only being beat by Chiarelli. Now you are stuck with a horribly flawed roster, a terrible cap situation and very little prospects and major bad deals you may not be able to move. It's unfortunate because I want to see the Canucks be good. They are my 2nd favorite team.

Last year was a smart year to make a move. Could have got a major major return for Miller. Now everything is so much harder. OEL is unmoveable and Miller might be as well. It's a trainwreck.
