Here's something else to consider: for the past few years Erik Karlsson was considered to have one of the worst 3 contracts in the league. Now after 28 great games he's suddenly worth 3-4 good pieces... what's likely to happen for the remainder of his contract? The "past 4 years Karlsson" or the "past 28 game Karlsson"? Considering he's 32 years old and has 4 more years remaining after this one, I just can't get past the risk. Even at $7.5M.

It's a similar climate to Ottawa, where Karlsson's wife is from and where they maintain a home. I don't think the weather in Edmonton would be a significant consideration.
