The blue koolaid in Toronto must be getting stronger... As if the Sharks are going to retain 40% of $11.5 mil for 5 years!

Karlsson is the opposite player of what the Leafs need right now. They need hard nose 2-way forwards, grinding forwards, stay-at-home physical dmen.

Not puck moving d-men with limited defensive skills

actually, they would do it happily..........This is a quick fix for SJ. Karlsson has been great this year, but is still a minus as the second highest scoring Dman in the league. With his injury history and the fact that he's shooting at 22%,, this run just isn't sustainable and he'll deteriorate fairly rapidly over the next 5 years of the contract. Leafs don't need more offense from defense.......they need more stable defense from the defense.
This deal nets another offensive threat at a good contract ($7mil for 80 points is a steal, even if he doesn't play 200 ft) and a young D man, built in the mold of Karlsson, at a fraction of the cost. Plus a first. Sharks would retain 50% to do it and they'd still be winning.

No they wouldn't. 40% of 11.5 = 4.6 mil x 5 years = 23 million dollars. No team is going to retain that much money for that long for so little. Add another late first or make it a top prospect instead of mediocre undersized Niemela and they might think about retaining 20% or so.

It's funny, a lot of people used mediocre and undersized for Karlsson too.

They'd do it because they desperately need to change the team. and his signing was a huge mistake
