Change it to a 2023 first and you likely got yourself a deal

The OP offer is pretty much the deal that Fla gave up to get Giroux @ 50% retained, and if it takes a 2023 1st to get it done i would walk away. Leafs need a minute eater stay at home dman to pair with MO and i would rather spend the package the OP offered here on that type of player

Change it to the '23 first and I'd definitely consider it. Basically the Giroux package. Guess it depends on whether you think you can get a bit for Schenn at the deadline by seperating him out of this deal or not.

Guess it depends on how you define a "top 4 dman". Like, Kyle Burroughs is also playing "top 4" minutes for the Nucks right now, but he is most assuredly not a top 4 dman.

That being said, I think the Nucks get more by moving Schenn seperately.

Canucks fans think Ethan Bear has no value because he’s been a healthy scratch. You are correct about the definition of a top 4 defenseman.

There isn't a top 4 defenceman in this trade.

Literally every Canuck fan believes Schenn is a capable top 4 defenceman.

I’m not a Canucks fan and we agree on this point. BTW - Ethan Bear has no value because he’s been a healthy scratch.

Why would they trade one of their few high character vets, who plays high leverage minutes and protects young players, and can be signed for relatively cheap?

Only makes sense if it’s a big overpay, not as a throw in on some Horvat package

Because he is a depth defenseman on an expiring contract. If they can get an asset for him he is replaceable. I think they can get a 3rd for him. Which is what this deal is essentially. Niemela, Engvall and 1st for Horvat and 3rd for Schenn.

Perhaps his minutes are replaceable, but his impact not so much. Again, Canucks are going through an incredible rough patch right now; guys not buying in, low effort levels in practice, etc. they need more Luke schenn character guys, not fewer.

Trading schenn for a 3rd is a big mistake imo

I tend to see any of this trades as deadline deals anyway as most teams are right at the cap. I like him alright but ya the way they've started, the injuries they have, they aren't making the playoffs. In which case they should be moving pieces and rebuilding. Not even a major step back, trade Horvat, Garland, Boeser, Schenn type of guys, get picks, create space and address the team needs through the draft and free agency. Holding onto hope for this group again is getting silly.
