Hajek is rostered and Jones will be in the AHL instead of being a scratch so that they can be under the cap.
Jones would get called up for injuries and would play over Hajek in the playoffs.

          - Ryder Korczak is a good prospect for the hawks
          - The Dallas pick is a potential lottery pick that would be really nice for the Blackhawks in a stacked draft

This is the exact mindset which emptied the team's prospect cupboard a few years back- and led to the "letter to the fans" when the players they spent their draft/prospect capital on were unable to deliver right away, yet weren't around for a wide Cup window.

Just about every Cup winner within memory has "stubbed its toe" before breaking through to win the Cup...the Avs FINALLY were able to break through last year to go deep- and in fact win a Cup. Look at the trouble TOR is having just winning a series- even with the fire power they've assembled. So throwing significant assets at ONE player for a ONE shot chance to win the Cup is about as dumb as it gets!

And there is no such thing as draft picks being irrelevant! Especially in the CAP era we're in, it is essential for teams (that have a chance at winning) to have up and coming talent to replace players which price themselves off a team. Have to build for a contention window- not 1 shot at the Cup.

This is a stupid take in my opinion. Kane isn't just a rental. He instantly makes you the cup favorite.

I guess you are referring to Lehkonen?
He was not a rental....he was RFA come July- who COL actually extended. If Kane were RFA and/or the NYR had any ability to extend him it would be a totally different situation. That said- if I'm giving up a 1st round pick (let alone a 1st + more assets) I want a player coming back that the team has at least 2 playoff runs with. Or if the payer is RFA- at least you can move him and get a return if you choose not to extend.

The Rangers can't do that though. They're cap crunched for the next coming years and need players with expiring contracts.

And what do you do if Kane gets hurt? Remember Zucarello in Dallas?
Or what if Shest gets hurt (obviously nothing to do with Kane...but one weakness he has shown is tendency to get injured)
In either case here (and several more can be added)- they would no longer be a Cup favorite.

Point is: too much can go wrong in a single Cup run- so it's foolish to aim at one Cup run.

Thats a stupid point ngl. Every player on the team has an equal chance of getting injured. Kane hasn't even been injury prone in his career.

It was previously said all that needed to be said. The Rangers are not just building for a single cup run, but are creating a contention window and that includes not taking lightly restocking young talent with the draft. There are pros and cons, Kane would be a big help but guarantees nothing.

Looks like this discussion is going south. I don't get involved with these discussions to be dismissive of any other posters so I'll leave it with this: you've made your points regarding Kane- and I agree he'd be a great add to any team pursuing the Cup....I just don't think it's the Rangers' best interest to pursue him beyond a modest cost due to the Cap constraints they have going forward.
