the cap counts in Nashville, too - the Preds currently have $3.9M in cap space, sure, but they only have 20 guys counting. Even if you assume they only bring up 2 guys making the minimum at $750K, that drops their cap space to about $2.4M and that's not enough to eat Kerfoot's deal.
also: even if Nashville is fine running a 22 man roster, there's no way they're sending back a positive asset. They know your cap situation, they're not going to pay for the privilege of helping you get cap compliant (see: recent trades for Dmitry Kulikov, Max Pacioretty, Brent Burns, and Oliver Bjorkstrand returning next to nothing, if anything was sent back at all.)
