Description

So im only going to change a couple of variables in oilers history, does this make the team significantly better?

Lets theorize that Klefbom was never injured
We assume the rest of the D signings / trades they made stayed the same

that would likely mean that 1. Darnell Nurse would be a 2LD and would likely only be making 5-5.5 million,
2. Barrie probably wouldn't have been signed as we had Klef to run the PP

With changing just 1 variable I think this is one of the best teams in the league and can be considered a true cup contender

More just a thought experiment, it's not often that a team has their #1 Defenceman in their prime have a career ending injury.

Its interesting to think how 1 thing changes this much for a team

I still think we end up with Barrie even if klef was fine because Barrie choose Edmonton and signed at a discount to make it happen maybe that would have forced another move elsewhere on the roster. The biggest change I think it would have made is drafting broberg in my opinion that pick was made as future insurance for this exact situation. If klef and Nurse had no health issues I don't see taking a lefty that year.

Wrong. Nurse was playing more (and harder) minutes than Klefbom by his 22 year old season.

2017-18 TOI/GP at 5v5
Nurse: 18:53 (34.8% v Elites)
Klefbom: 16:57 (32.3% v Elites)

Klefbom played 2 more seasons after that, so it wasn't like he was injured and on his way out. Nurse was already ahead of Klefbom as a 22 year old. He's a legit 1st pair defenseman for 5 years despite not being paid like one.

Why would it have stopped the 2nd bridge, and how could that have lowered his AAV to $6M?? They signed the bridge knowing the Klefbom was going to LTIR - they simply didn't have the money for a long term deal. And he signed at $5.6M x 2, the corollary to that definitively isn't $6M x 8.

IIRC the number being bandied about that summer was in the $7 - 8M range for a long term contract, but they didn't have the cap space to make it happen.

Good to know, I was under the assumption that they bridged him because they assumed he would still be their 2nd pair dman and wouldnt have to pay him a super expensive deal when the bridge was done
