The idea of adding Patrick Kane to Edmonton's roster certainly triggers the imagination. However, the Oilers appear to need a high-end top-4 defenseman, or two, more than they need to have the potential of four 50-goal scorers.

Putting the offer aside. What are your thoughts about Toews on Washington? With Backstrom out you need a center and can afford him at 50% right?

Our center core is Kuznetsov, Strome, Eller, McMichael, and Dowd. We also have Lapierre who may be good enough to make the team this year if there’s a spot for him, as well as Protas who played center in juniors and has played wing with the caps. The caps have plenty of centers. If the caps want to make a move for a center, it’s because they’re looking for a marginal upgrade to push for the cup this year. Honestly, Toews is a 3C at best in Washington, and we’re probably better off letting McMichael take that spot. He’s looked really good at center, struggled at wing, and the organization feels the same way about him. I think if anything, we’re moving out Eller.
