Marner for simmionds straight up wouldn't work

As much as I love the Wayne train I rather marner

I break down the trade like this. Marner for the Flyers 1st pick (2nd overall) that's about even. Though as Leaf fan, I know what Marner is, and the pick is an unknown. And the pick might not even help next year.
Simmons (two years for till UFA) for Kapanen (controlled for 5 years) and 17th pick. Short term better for the Leafs, but it's not like the Leaf are making a run for the Cup in the next two years.
Looking three years down the road, IMO Leafs would rather have Marner, Kapanen (a replacement for JVR possibly) and the 17th pick starting his NHL career, than just having the 2017 pick 2nd overall..

And the trade doesn't help the Leafs defence which is need of an upgrade...not RW.

The only thing that Philly has that the leafs would consider dealing Marner for is Provorov. Philly fans probably balk at this, just like us leafs fans would at Marner proposal, he's that valuable to us.

Marner retires a Leaf. Management loves him as much as Leaf fans do. The value is there, but the Leafs haven't the stomach to trade Magic Mitch.

Good luck paying him, Kaspari, Auston, Morgan and Connor Brown.
