You're right about the Leafs not wanting Kunitz or Scuderi. But if you think as I do, that the Leafs have to rid themselves of Captain Phanuef, taking on salary in the short term is the only way to go. An added bonus to Pittsburg or any team would take Phanuef, is that his actually salary is somewhat front loaded, so the actually dollars in salary (not cap) going forward is lower.
For two years, the Leafs could actually bury Kunitz or Scuderi salaries in the minors or release them outright, play a couple of youngsters or low cost vets and still not be over the cap. Money itself isn't the concern, but salary cap going forward is.
So the trade is basically trying to free cap space in year starting 2018, and ridding the Leafs of the Phanuef and his captaincy now.

Ooooohh this one has some merit palhal. I know the general consensus here is that "Makes no sense, why would the Leafs want two washed up old guys for Phaneuf?" but hey need to think about this from a long term POV. Kunitz could be re-traded the minute he's in Toronto, for at worst a mediocre draft pick and Scuderi can be bought out following year. That means in theory: T.O traded a 42 million dollar contract away for a 3.25m cap hit for year one (and then a buy out cap hit of 1.7m after that) and a 3rd round pick. That's crazy money that can be saved and given to players such as Stamkos if he were available.
