Two Trades with Justification

Description
Rational:

1st trade-

Justin Holl played for Seattle Kraken Head Coach Dave Haskstol and had his best season under his guidance(2nd pairing with Jake Muzzin for duration of 2020-2021 season). Toronto also went to great lengths (traded for Jared McCann) in the Expansion Draft to protect Justin Holl and Alex Kerfoot from Seattle knowing that one would be taken. Seattle Kraken also would be adding a decent 2nd or 3rd line RHD with middling underlying numbers in a 6”3 210+ frame and PK experience. He would slot in as Seattles 3rd RHD and 2nd PK duty, replacing Willam Borgen and his partner would be Jamie Oleksiak forming a big, solid 2nd line pairing in Seattle, one that Dave Hakstol would enjoy.

Toronto obviously gets out of cap purgatory by trading $2 million and frees up a roster spot for Ramus Sandin while adding picks to a depleted prospect pool.

Jamie Benn rounds out the defence and Wayne Simmonds and Kyle Clifford and Nick Robertson slot in and out of the lineup jumping from the Marlies to the Leafs. Nobody is claiming Clifford or Simmonds as both would retire instantly and Toronto can simply place Adam Gaudette on waivers (he passed through last season) to call up Nick Robertson or Pontus Holmberg or other stand out Marlies.

2nd trade:

Nashville has no intention of tearing down or rebuilding. They see themselves as a potential playoff team and will want to add strong players to get there. Alex Kerfoot is a dependable and highly deployable player throughout the lineup. I highly suspect he would replace the LW Tanner Jeannoton on the 3rd line with Colton Sissons which would form a pretty solid shutdown line for John Hynes to utilize.

Toronto would benefit from additional cap space and picks to replenish a thinning prospect pool and it’s also exactly what Ottawa got for Connor Brown who is comparable in cap hit and production.

1st signing:

Ramus Sandin has a high upside and if Toronto can lock him down with the guarantee of a roster spot and strong ongoing role along with more money for the extra two years, they should.

2nd signing:

Evan Rodrigues had a career year last season but most teams across the league are cap strapped and most line ups are set. He seems like the perfect fit for Toronto at a discount and Dubas has already traded for him once before (Kasperi Kapanen trade). The allure of playing with JT and Nylander in Toronto could be the bet on yourself move for Rodrigues.

Appreciate the write-up, but Seattle does not want Holl.

Honestly, nothing crazy here. Holl is a good 3rd pair dman. People are stupid to think otherwise. But thats all he is, and for 2M its a fine and fair price.

Kerfoot I get looks like a piece to move out for the cap space. I however would rather Statsny over E.Rod. I think you could get him for 2M or so.

But either way, this is just kinda simple and logical. Not often seen on these haha

The Kraken already have a good depth on the right side. Larsson and Schultz are better than Holl, Borgen is the same, but cheaper, and there's no sense in acquiring a 7th D for picks and a 2M cap hit.

What about the argument that both your Head Coach and GM wanted Holl? There is also quite a bit of data supporting the fact that Justin Holl has played against tougher matchups and yielded positive results and has done so far more than Borgen who he would be replacing. I believe based on what I’ve seen that Holl would lineup fine after Seattles other RHD

That's not really an argument, it's something you speculated. The roster is full and Holl is a downgrade, there's no reason for the Kraken to even consider Holl. Maybe at TDL, as a roster balancing player for Larsson if Seattle is in the basement? That would require Leafs giving up picks+prospects though.

What am I speculating? There is substantial evidence that Seattle wanted Holl as outlined above, on top of there is data that proves that Holl is better than Borgen who he would be replacing.

There's no "substantial evidence." You said Holl had his best season under Hakstol and claimed that is why Seattle wants Holl. Career seasons happen with many players and many coaches, you don't see NYR trading for Marchessault just because Gallant is now the coach. Seattle isn't doing that, Borgen did a good job on the bottom pair, even if you want to argue that they're equal, Borgen is still cheaper. There are 30 other teams the Leafs can trade Holl to, the Kraken isn't going to pay the Leafs to take their unwanted players. As I said before, If the Leafs are desperate to only move him to Seattle, it's going to cost Toronto picks and prospects.

All of this seems well thought out and sane. I know no one wants Holl - but he's a capable 5-6 on a lot of teams - I think the Leafs will be able to trade him before the start of the season. Well done!
