I’d maybe give that up for Tkachuk, but not for one year of an aging Tarasenko. That’s a lot of young/future assets to trade away….

That is an awful trade for the islanders

This lineup wouldn’t even make the playoffs , most likely pick in the top 10 next season. They won’t have their 1st rd pick but at least they’ll have a 32 year old Tarasenko

Bit of an overreaction no?

The only roster talent given up is Whalstrom. Everything else stays the same. How would that team miss the playoffs?

Not at all - successful teams don't constantly throw away 1st rd picks for players at or on the wrong side of 30. Tarasenko is getting old and he played with two elite talents last season which boosted his point totals. The Isles aren't close to being contenders, so this trade just sends them into hockey purgatory.

There is a high chance all of Tarasenko, Nelson, Lee, Pageau, Bailey, and Palmieri regress next season,. Thats usually what happens once a player hits 31,32 YO. Adding another 30+ YO at the expense of giving up wahlstrom and a 1st rd pick in the deepest draft since 2015 is absurd. I don't think a team with 10 of it's 12 forwards 30 or older has made the playoffs in the last 5 years.

So you're basically saying isles window is closed and they should pack it in? That's the absurd part.

Whalstrom, holmstrom, that first won't have an impact for another few years. Bode might never make an impact unless he's on a team that tolerates vaxx status.

There is no agreeing here, we're of two different mindsets. My mindset is capitalize on the open window and sacrifice the future. You're mindset is cut the losses and focus on the future. Sorry, but I've been watching this team for too long do that strategy, I'd rather give up future talent for a 40 goal guy, no matter his age,

The isles window Is definitely closed, this team is way too old to compete - the game is getting younger and this teams average age is pushing 30.

Lets look at the last 4 lamoriello teams with an average age of around 30 YO

21-22 Isles: Missed the playoffs
14-15 NJD: Missed the playoffs
13-14 NJD: Missed the playoffs
12-13 NJD : Missed the playoffs

The narrative that Wahlstrom won't have an impact for another few years is an ancient way of thinking . A forwards prime years are usually from 22-27 YO. He ranks 3rd among all isles forwards in goals per 60 min over the past 2 seasons.

Tarasenko is old and he's coming off a season where he played with two elite players who are much better than him (Thomas and Buchnevich). He will struggle to hit 30 goals next season. The best thing for the isles is to fail miserably next season and miss the playoffs by 20 pts because then there's a higher change the team sees extreme change. I want to see guys like Bailey, Pageau, Lee, Palmieri continue to regress because this team needs a major change in philosophy. This is a young mans game and a team constructed like this doesn't deserve to be successful.

I don’t have an issue acting like a win-now team. But Tarasenko just isn’t worth that much imo, especially at his age and on the cusp of UFA

Tarasenko will put up more points than wahlstrom next season, even possibly the season after. But that's arguing nothing.

Again you're proving my point we disagree on the window. lamoriello's over 30 teams history are irrelevant because it has nothing to do with the players themselves - just the team of that time. I would also note that the average last season was heavily skewed by chara and greene, but I digress

We will fundamentally disagree because we don't agree on the window. Good chatting with you, have a nice day.

It's a fair point. I think I shoudl clarify this is the most I'm willing to pay, if Lou could pull off less, then great

It's highly unlikely Tarasenko is the better player than Wahlstrom next season (assuming they get similar ice time) . Tarasenko is one of the leagues biggest regression candidates and he won't be carried by two stars.

It is relevant because it's been proven that teams with an average age of around 30 are usually not successful. The team you constructed here has an average age of around 30 , its an issue if the team really thinks it can contend. The difference between the isles front office (and fanbase) and the rest of the NHL is that the rest of the NHL knows that you have to have a relatively young forward group to contend. Unfortunately for the isles, the game has passed Lou by and because of that the isles are currently a retirement home for regressing veteran players.
