Description
The Patrick Kane trade seems to fit what Chicago is looking for. They are accumulating draft picks, not players. But Kane won’t get the same return that DeBrincat did. The Canes acquire Barrie from Edmonton to replace TDA on the power-play (with a 3rd team retaining salary - Canes won’t pay his current salary or they’d have just re-signed TDA and Edm needs cap space) That said, he plays on the third pairing with limited minutes. The Canes try to re-create the pre-Covid play of Slavin and Bear, but have plenty of options on the right side if that experiment fails, including moving Pesce to play on the top pairing. I keep Necas and his potential with a bridge deal and a chance to play 2C. I know Staal is the 3C, but I expect the Canes to phase KK there through the year and for him to be 3C moving forward as Staal likely isn’t back in 2023. Zadorov replaces Cole on 3rd pairing and PK and beings needed physicality and a stay at home mentality in partnering with Barrie (or can easily slide in with Chatfield for a nasty bottom pairing).

Definitely get a 3rd team involved for any Kane/Toews trade. Both of them had their bonuses paid July 1st so a 3rd team would only need to pay $775,000 to retain an additional 50%

Kane isn't moving unless there is a 1st involved. Likely Hawks hold him until the TDL, then maximize the return when his cap hit is prorated and Hawks retain 1/2 of the prorated cap hit making him affordable for a lot of playoff teams

We will see… a 1st is not out of the realm of possibility. But the Hawks want to be terrible now. They would have added young players to the DeBrincat and Dach deals if that wasn’t the case. Keeping Toews and Kane til the deadline is a terrible idea from a roster management perspective because they will win games for you.

And Chicago is clearly not maximizing returns. That DeBrincat haul was weak. This new front office wants their own guys and clearly wants to motivate Kane and Toews to have their NMC.

Kane and Toews alone will not win games; Toews is a 3C at this point for one. Kane will likely be moved, but he's going to tell the Hawks where he wants to go which despite limiting his market, they will also do this into the season is my guess because his cap hit gets prorated....plus 50% retention, and Kane become affordable to teams looking to make a run, thus driving up his value. The problem with the Cat trade, beyond being a bad move by the GM for that price, he didn't have an extension worked out so as of now, Ottawa only has him for 2 seasons. a top 10 pick a 2nd and a 3rd for 2 seasons of cat with a $9M cap hit next season is not a great return, but you start to understand why it wasn't. Had they worked with a team, Cat and and his agent, and traded him with an extension getting signed, he would have gone for a boatload more.

I mean...Debrincat's trade was bad, BUT I have a hunch that Kyle Davidson needed to move him out by any means necessary because Kane's been public that he'd stay if Debrincat was in CHI. You can't tank if you have Debrincat and Kane. So now Kane's going to want to leave. It's Kyle Davidson's plan to tank. He got a reasonable return for Dach and he crushed the Hagel trade.

He did crush the Hagel trade, I’ll give you that. I don’t see Kane staying until the fall, but we will see. I think Davidson is looking for picks not roster players. So maybe a 1, 2, and 3. But Kane for a season with no rights (unlike DeBrincat) is a big ask. My guess is he gets either a first and a pair of 3’s or 2 seconds and a third.
