He could have gotten the 8th year (in Calgary). He turned it down. So it’s only 7 year deals left. Doesn’t mean he gets more $….it will steal be around the $9.5m per year.

Calgary is the only team that can offer him the 8th year to keep the AAV down. 8x10=80mil and the open market value for that is 7x11.5=80.5mil. He’s better than Panarin was when he hit the open market too. There’s no way he’s only signing for 7x9.5 when he already turned down 8x9.5 to play for a team he likes lol

Panarin was offered $96m to stay in Columbus, but opted for less money to go to the place he wanted to play. And that was before flat cap, people expected upper limit to be around $98m by the end of his deal, but will only be around $87m.

And if he turned down $80m from Calgary, that does not mean he gets at least $80m elsewhere…especially since 7-year and 8-year deals are not compared that way.

Gaudreau likes it in Calgary and if he was gonna give any team a discount, it would be the Flames, especially because they can offer that crucial 8th year, which is worth far more than a slightly higher AAV over 7. Regardless, his market value is expected to be 13.8mil on a 7 year deal (according to Dom) and his EH contract projection is 7x10.9. There’s a 0% chance he’s signing for 7x9.5. He’s making an 8 figure AAV for sure, and that number is probably over 11 if he leaves the Flames.
