Description
Rakell brings a set of skills with him that, like Puljujarvi, complement McDavid's play (skating, forechecking, and two-way ability) while having more developed offensive tools. Tolvanen brings an elusive offensive game with a strong shooting arsenal while also being notably cheaper than alternatives for 2 years. I'm confident that both would thrive in EDM.

The reconstructed 4th line brings 3 big bodies with enough of a track record to rely on them to not get beaten like past iterations of Oiler 4th lines. Carrier in particular is a very effective 4th liner.

The blueline gets MUCH bigger (Soucy, Desharnais, and Broberg are all 6'3 and above replacing 6'1 Keith, 5'11 Barrie, and 5'10 Russell) and more capable of defending. Kulak's understated game was key to the Oilers making progress in the playoffs and I think Soucy brings much of the same. Both should help insulate the young D as they develop.

Campbell seems to be high on Holland's list and, given the success he has had with ex-Leafs (Barrie, Ceci, and Hyman), I think he'll do what it takes to get his guy.

Lastly, the trades were made with the intention of recouping some of the many lost picks. This team is going to need to continue to hit on mid-to-late round picks.

Your explanation for Tolvanen is exactly why Poile tells Holland to pound sand. He'a just as good younger and cheaper, but you expect Nashville to add a 3?!!!!!!!!! really??!!!

Quite a strong overreaction over a 3rd, don't ya think? grimace If you disagree with my perception of their respective trade value, you can state that without adding all the ?s and !s and the righteous indignation. Maybe others will disagree, but I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that Puljujarvi is generally valued more than Tolvanen.

Not enough for Campbell, there will be competition (his ask is around $6M)

A really nice construction, he said fearfully. I am hoping Holland isn't as productive.

I'd be surprised if Campbell gets as much as $5.5 million. Let's remember this prediction when he signs. You know where to find me.

Sure, but Edmonton isn't the only team interested. Especially with how weak the goalie market is and how expensive to trade for a goalie is, Campbell is one of the best available. It's not just Edmonton that is interested, it's the Devils, Sabres, and Red Wings (home town team)

Our lack of true left winger would be the reason I would say no to trading tolvanen. I wouldn’t mind going after Puljujarvi but not for tolvanen

"but you expect Nashville to add a 3?!!!!!!!!! really??!!!"

Well, if this is the tenor of your normal responses, I'd suggest you'll be better received without all the extra punctuation- or the exasperated "really" wink

Sure, plenty of good players have come from the 3rd round, but the likelihood of getting such a player is rather low (sub-10% iirc). Further, the trade value of a 3rd is generally a bottom-of-the-roster player when moved at the deadline or a fading/boom-bust prospect. I'm not saying your conclusion is wrong- it may well be the majority opinion- but that's what these things exist to discuss: the relative values or assets and the merit of trades conceived around them.

I don't think I agree that the goalie market is weak or that a goalie is expensive to acquire. Campbell is among the best bets out there, but there a pretty large number of starting or potential starting goalies on the market this offseason. Gibson & Hellebuyck are the expensive options that head up a market including Fleury (not an option), Kuemper, Varlamov, Husso, one of Samsonov or Vanecek, Holtby, Georgiev, and likely one of Reimer or Hill.

Regardless, his ask may be 6mil but we'll see if teams bite on that. My point is, I don't think 5.5mil is outside of the realm of reason even if it's a tad shy.

Plus some places he wouldn't like to play and probably wouldn't consider (Arizona, Seattle) and dark horses Washington, Ottawa and Chicago.

But I still don't think that he gets $5.5 million. Nevertheless, the OP is being careful in budgeting.

That's a fair point, but that seems like a rather minor concern given you have Jeannot in the NHL and L'Heureux, Parssinen, and arguably Svechkov and Afanaseyev (some sources say LW, others say C) bubbling under and a UFA market rife with LWs. If the team added a name like Burakovsky, Neiderreitter, Palat, or Domi, would your view soften?

That's certainly a possibility! PIT also has quality Cs for him to play with. At what AAV do you think PIT would not be willing to re-sign him?

honestly I have no clue, that was all speculation. I think he is a great fit on either team. Hextall is a very tough negotiator and it is impossible to know what is really going on, but what we do know is that he has priorities: he will get letang signed, then he will move onto geno, then the rest. So I don't think even Hextall knows what it will take, he has likely only had preliminary talks with rakell. The first thing that happened this summer was the Bryan Rust extentsion, this tells me "we would love to keep rakell in addition to rust, but rust is the priority". If Rakell hits FA I would expect 4 or 5 years at an AAV of 4.5-5 million. But based on what Mikheyev's agent thinks Mikheyev can get I wouldnt be surprised to see Rakell in the 5s.
