The key in any contract negotiation is how long that player is willing to sign for and for how much. AAV goes down if the contract is longer term. It goes up when it's shorter term.

EVH has Fiala comped at $7-8M on his next contract if it's long-term.

If the team is in win now mode and they want Fiala for only a few years while they go for it and are willing to overpay on a shorter term contract to keep him there. The assets they're moving are going to be futures and do them no good anyway. They're expendable, to put it bluntly. So a higher AAV isn't likely to scare them off, now is it.

That doesn't mean trade value and the overall return diminishes just because he's going to be signed for a higher AAV. Because if the team wants the player badly enough, and is comfortable enough with the contract to be signed by the incoming player the assets delt are basically inconsequential in the acquiring teams mind.

If they're not comfortable, they move on. Bottom line.

Because, contrary to your condescending opinion. Guerin can afford to resign Fiala as is. He just wouldn't be able to keep our depth intact or sign everyone else. But if contracts are moved out, then he could keep everyone and Fiala. He is absolutely under no obligation or need to trade him.

Whether it would be easy is up for debate. But there are more than enough teams out there that could use those players that it shouldn't be thought of as impossible or that the league has some idiotic leverage over him when there is none.

But given the high return that Fiala should bring back in a trade and the extra work it would take to move out multiple players just to keep one. Yeah, it's not surprising Fiala is on the block. But don't ever let that fool you into thinking he's backed into a corner because of it.
