Next Season v7 Realistic

Description
Nothing really too spicy in this Armchair GM. The big trade is sending Barrie away for a cheaper replacement that can play defense. There are plenty of options for this, including:

To Dallas for Hakanpaa + a pick (In case they lose Klingberg)
To Pittsburgh (In case they lose Letang) or Montreal (In case they lose Petry) for a 2nd Rounder
To Seattle for Soucy (More expensive contract)

Or the option that I chose, which is 1 for 1 for Mayfield. Cheap contract and he is very good at both entry defense and in-zone defense (perks of playing under Trotz for a time). I think the Islanders are a team that could use Barrie to increase their offense / PowerPlay, so I don't think this is the wildest trade to consider.

The rest is just FA signings. McLeod gets 1.8 for 3 years as a nice bridge contract. Puljujarvi gets a little more than his qualifying offer for 1 more year as a prove-it deal. Yamamoto gets a stock standard "20-Goal season" contract of 3 mil. Kulak has had the 2 mil price tag floated around, so I stuck with that. Husso I think I overpaid a bit but somewhere around the 3 mil mark makes sense. Kane I just gave 6 mil, but i could see him coming in at 5.5 as well. The rest were minor league deals to bump up the farm and to use in case of injury. Don't read into it too much.

This has us promoting Holloway, Broberg, Skinner, Niemelainen, and Benson. I also think this roster is realistic because we don't NEED to sell off Foegele or Kassian yet. We can always do that next year when each player only has 1 year left on their contracts. If we wanna make moves at the deadline, we still have time and cap room to do so as well.

So, if I'm reading this right, you're thinking that it's not a hilairously large long shot that Lou Lamoriello, who builds teams based on a defence first philosophy, would turn around after 35 years in the NHL to change how he builds teams? That he'd trade a very good, very cheap RD, to acquire a defenceman who can't play defence, all the while giving you around $3 mil in cap space, which allows you to upgrade in net, and to re-sign Kane? And all of this depends on Smith and Keith retiring?

Seems to be fairly Edmonton-friendly here, and quite unlike something that Lou would do.

Most of that is a somewhat fair comment but kinda have exception to Barrie can't defend. Agree he's not as strong as Mayfield in this respect but in just two years with Edmonton I've seen a night and day difference in barries ability to defend and its much more capable than his reputation on this site suggests.

Honestly, and to be completely fair, you're not wrong that Barrie takes a beating around here, but I also think Edmonton has played him the way that he needs to be played-well protected defensively (3rd pairing-5th in ATOI for dmen in Edmonton), and he's not a bad fit as their 5th/6th dman to run a pp unit. He's obviously a bit expensive for that role.

When it comes to the Isles, they've already got Dobson playing on PP1. I guess I just don't see much of a point in saying "Ah heck, our D was actually great last year, but let's make that worse and add cap in the process.

"Kane I just gave 6 mil, but i could see him coming in at 5.5 as well"

Kane has already let it be known that he would take a discount only to stay with Edmonton and that would have to start with a 7. Anywhere else he wants 8, so not sure how you give him 6 but could see him coming in at 5.5

I agree in the sense that Barrie is probably not a fit for islanders kinda an odd destination to send him I just feel compelled to stick up for the guy around here. Gets dumped on an insane amount for very little reason and doesn't get credited for the things he does do exceptionally well.

I've seen other reports that have him at 7 mil for other teams but for the Oilers he would come in "at a number that starts with 5." And have also heard other report corroborating this sentiment that say that if the Oilers sign him for less than 7 mil and the court case makes Kane a Shark again, the teams would put together a side trade that sends him to EDM at that price value (with SJ retaining the difference). I haven't heard 8 from anywhere personally.

NYI 21st in the league in offense last year. I think they 100% can do with a little less defense and a little more offense. It's not like Barrie plays 0 defense, and like someone else said, the Islanders have the man power to shelter him in a 5/6 role. It doesn't seem to me like the Islanders are fiending for cap space, and this move will 100% improve the team without costing them holistically on their strengths. But again, if you don't like this move, you can choose which Barrie trade you prefer the most from the list I gave above.

He cant afford to take less than $6M with his gambling and wife issues.

If you think this is realistic for a Ken Holland team, your nuts. Just look at the last 10 years of Red Wing teams for a track record.
1. For starters Puljujarvi taking $1.8M but Yamamoto gets $3? They are comps for each other. Puljujarvi has .51 points per game over the last 2 years and Yamamoto has .47 in the same 2 years. If i am any other team and find out the offer is $1.8M im offering him $3M or maybe even a touch more.
2. if Smith and Keith retire, Holland will go after veterans for that "Veteran depth" that he loves. He is not making your team younger if your lucky enough to catch a break on those two.
3. i agree with everything state above on Mayfield and Barrie. You might be able to get Mayfield, but your adding one hell of a sweetner. The discount that Mayfield plays for makes him more valuable

truthfully, the cap is going to be an issue for Edmonton until 2024 when Draisiatl leaves in free agency
