Part 1 of 32 of my "If I was GM" series this off season. Trying to keep as realistic as possible, but of course stuff happens in the hockey world that is unexpected.
Heres my analysis on all my moves:
RFA:
Milano - There is not a player in the NHL that I was looking forward to this season than Milano. He finally had his long awaited breakout season in a contract year, and deserves a good raise on a bridge deal.
Lundestrom - Liked his play this season, I expect him to continue his steady growth pattern.
Steel - Solid bottom line guy, has some developing to go, could see him get some time in the middle six this season for sure.
Vaakanainen - Solid bottom pairing d-man, not much to show for as far as points but brings a decent defensive game.
UFA:
Aston-Reese - Great depth guy.
Burakovsky - This is probably the biggest in my opinion. Though some people may look at it and question, I think Burakovsky is a fantastic fit in Anaheim. Has plenty of playoff experience, deserves ice time in a top 6, which is definitely provided here.
Mikheyev - I see so many people not giving Mikheyev the love and I dont see it. He was well over half a point per game in the bottom 6 in Toronto, and fitting him in the Top 6 is exactly what should happen. It is only a 2-year deal, so if I were to be completely wrong, then there will only be one season after this one to keep him on the books.
Rutta - Great depth d-man to help develop Vaakanainen.
Murray - Great defensive minded guy to play alongside Drysdale.
TRADES:
Comtois to EDM - Unfortunately has to happen. Get a decent return, EDM gets depth.
Grant to DET - Depth C very well suited for a young DET team. Getting whatever possible in return.
OVERALL ANALYSIS:
Anaheim is not a team that needs to go out and make massive trades to fix their issues and help them contend. Though all of the guys I added could be very well replaced by guys on the trade market, I dont see why the ducks dont be spenders in Free Agency and keep the assets they have to prepare for any possible options that come alive over the next few seasons. Guys like Fiala, JT Miller, Konecny, ect but I dont see why they would elect to go with any of these guys over Burakovsky, or even Palat and Forsberg which are both options in the open market.
Obviously Gibson leaving has been a heavy topic, though he has denied all of the rumours. Even if he is looking to be on his way out, if he is promised a much improves defensive core (which I dont have happening in my creation) he may be convinced to give it a go again.
The Top 6 is evidently my main target, though some minor restructure in the defensive core is definitely needed, which I have done by adding Rutta and Murray. I could possibly see them adding a big name right shot D, someone like Letang, but I dont think that he benefits a whole lot, as he will be taking icetime from Drysdale due to the domino effect of the lines, which should be the Ducks main focus on avoiding this season.
Could I see the Ducks make a huge push for one of the huge name all stars in the market? Most definitely. Is this a better option then signing some more smaller name guys that I see breaking out even more? No, I dont think it is any more efficient.
Not the cap thats the issue, his awful performance this passed season was the issue. Trading him now may be a slight (very slight) risk, though I see it as a necessity, as one more bad season and his value is all the way to the floor.
Why does giving up on Comtois' rehabilitation "have to happen"?!?!? You have a 22-man roster and a gazillion dollars' worth of cap space.

What in the world makes you see it as "a necessity"?!?!? Because we need the roster spot for someone else? You don't have a full one. Because we need the money for someone else? You aren't near our internal cap.
This is the worst idea you've had this month. And I haven't even seen any of the other ones.

Im not sure how this isnt a necessity, guy was abysmal. I think getting him for a 2nd was a stretch. Im not too sure if you watched him at all, or if you just watched him last year and are clueless to how awful he was.

Comtois is 146 games into his NHL career and has 67 points. You want to know someone else that's played 130 games and has 68 points? Brandon Hagel. Hagel got two firsts and two lesser players. Do I think Comtois is worth that... heck no. But he's worth more than a second.

I see your point in a way, though thats 16 more games played by Comtois and less points but ill ignore that, its the fact that a majority of Comtois points came from his all star season... looking a lot more like a one year wonder, doesnt compare to hagel.

The point wasn't to consider them exact comparables. The point is 23 yr-olds that have that kind of stats line have HIGH value in this league. One off year for Comtois when he was hindered by injuries and a coach that didn't exactly heap ice time on him does not negate what he is and the upside that he has.

I've watched over two thousand Anaheim Ducks games. How many have you watched?
Comtois wasn't abysmal. He was rehabbing. Eakins gave him limited time on ice for that reason.

Welcome to CapFriendly in general and the cadre of hard-core Anaheim fans in particular!
You've made an impressive early appearance -- a brilliant refutation of a clueless OP's ignorance. His insistence on repeatedly misusing the word "necessity" reveals how little he knows about the Ducks.
