The difficulty in evaluating John Gibson's trade value is the five seasons left on his contract. Either you believe that Gibson solves your goalie problem, or you don't; but if he does, that term is worth a significant amount. One year of Darcy Kuemper cost a late first, an A defensive prospect and a third; even if you consider Kuemper currently to be in better form than Gibson, it's hard to see how that return could be worth less than half of what Gibson would and should bring. Of course, half the Toronto fanbase, and half the Edmonton fanbase, think that "Gibson hasn't been good for three years." (Last summer, a couple of Oiler fans kept insisting that it made more sense to retain Mikko Koskinen than trade for Gibson.) In light of the undeniable fact that Toronto (and Edmonton) is a better team than Anaheim, I think that viewpoint is shortsighted.
The question will be moot if you can re-sign Jack Campbell, but if not, you'd better have a back-up plan.
