How Id set up playoff roster if no trades

Description
1) let Matthews run his own line. He's elite enough to do it.
2) Marner on 3rd line to make the best defensive line outside Marchand's. But one that SHOULD be able to put up offence if Marner can perform.
3) 4th line really meaningless because top 3 lines will get 90% of the ice time. Kerfoot likely gets some offensive zone starts on 3rd line in place of Kampf.
4) if you want Holl in the lineup, you've come to the wrong place to complain. I wanted Dubas fired for the combo of the Foligno trade and protecting holl over McCann. So might as well save your breath. I'd play Lyubushkin over Holl.

I'll be surprised if the Leafs don't trade for Giordano.

Would be a great pickup (depending on price). But isn't he LD? Really want to sit Sandin or Muzzin? Coach won't try either on off side.

Not against any of this but an alternative may be to try Nylander on 3C and move Kampf over to wing and throw Marner with Tavares. Who knows though, it feels like any combo is a tossup right now.

Pretty happy with Lyubushkin so far, I think I'd find a way to keep him in the fold too.

Yeah Gio is a LD. I'd think Keefe would want to reunite the Gio/Brodie pairing. They played together in Caigary for years. Cap works perfectly if Dubas finds a team to retain half on Gio.

I'd be fine with Nylander as 3C, but it dramatically takes away from its defensive prowess. I LOVE Nylander, but he's not elite defensively to say the least.

I like Lyubushkin as well, but I'm a big Dermott fan. I realize most aren't. But a liljegren is putting up elite numbers out there. Can't remove him.

Tough call with the lines, I'm personally not a fan of what you've got here though.

Don't break up arguably the best line in hockey (I'm stressing arguably before people go nuts on here).

Don't split up Kampf, Mik, and Engvall, they are getting better as the season goes on.

Robertson likely doesn't make the cut for the playoffs. It was clear last night Keefe does not trust him (yet) in key moments. Every moment will be key starting game 1.

Get Kerfoot back with JT and Willy, that line had great moments at times this year.

1) Keep Mikheyev - Kampf - Engvall together
2) Robertson's great but Kerfoot is more effective on a top-line (but that's debatable)
3) Marner should be playing with one of Matthews or JT... Willy and JT have the worst chemistry of all the big four combinations
4) Dermott is the Leaf's eighth-best d-man IMO
5) Instead of Dermott u could have holl or lybushkin ... I don't think Holl is THAT bad (but he shouldn't be in the top 4 either) ... Lybushkin's been playing good (better than Dermott anyways)

Honest question here, can Marner play C? I know he is good defensively and can setup plays with ease but can he play center? If so what about a center lineup of Matthews-Marner-Taveres-Kerfoot Or Matthews-Tavares-Marner-Kerfoot? Either way would make for a very potent offense and all centers would be capable of elevating their lineages play.

I can get behind everything you say. No issues with any of it. But I like the idea of gambling on new things when the old has clearly failed in the past when it matters. I wish Keefe would actually try new things. Tried Sandin on his off side and lasted 2 periods. Tried the big 4 split between 3 lines and lasted less than 1 full game.

Dermott is arguably Toronto's 2nd best defensive defenceman. 3rd if Muzzin gets his act together. And I'm strange in that I like defencemen being good at defence.

Holl shouldn't ever play for the big club again.

Without fact checking, I think he played C while he was with London. He's never played C for TOR, wouldn't be a great time to start seeing as TOR ranks tops in the league in faceoff percentage.

I think the answer is no on Marner. However, Nylander is a very good centre if given good wings.

Want a mind boggling stat you can research? Faceoff wins have almost nothing to do with scoring chances. You'd think having the puck more off draws would matter. It doesn't.

I don't necessarily disagree, was thinking heavily in terms of a PK situation. Winning a draw doesn't get a scoring chance, but it sure as hell makes it harder for the opposing team to get one if you win the draw and clear it.

"Mitch Marner has spent the majority of his junior career as a winger with the London Knights." - Mike Johnson from Sportsnet when he was drafted. He says he DID play some centre but not much.

Apparently even on PK doesn't matter. I was reading it recently but can't find the link.

Proves my point even more, don't move him to C.

I'm pretty sure Dvorak was his C in London, but anyway.

That is why the PK would have Tavares and Kerfoot as the centers lol. Just continuing with outside the box ideas lol.

I'm not old by any means, but I think I'm old enough to be out of touch with the advanced stats (if that's what you're referring to).

Not that I'm dismissing them or saying they're irrelevant, I prefer to judge based off of what I see. Guys who win faceoffs in their own end and clear it have a better chance of killing off the penalty (in my opinion).

I get what you mean. I think part of the problem is that people hear "analytics" or "advanced" and think it's crazy computer nonsense. But really simple. How many goals per 60 minutes. And can do it per 60 minutes short handed. Can compare on won faceoffs vs lost faceoffs in your own zone. And numbers virtually identical. One of those things that seems illogical but numbers don't lie.

Seems like the current line combinations work. I wouldn't change them, though still a lot of season and hopefully playoffs to go and injuries happen
I really don't how/why the Leafs can obtain a LHD and play him if Muzzin is part of the rotation. Reilly/Muzzin/Sandin seem to the guys. And nothing wrong with Brodie/Holl/Lybushin/Liljegren on the right.
That being said, IMO Muzzin has been Leafs worse Dman with season. Would the Leafs even think of benching him?

Holl was playing better lately...maybe because Muzzin has been missing. Still the RHD is Brodie, Lybushin....and Holl and Liljegren, and sometimes even Dermot.
But I don't see how a LHD can be obtained and then one of the current ones...either Muzzin or Sandin play the right side and better than Holl and Liljegren at this time. Putting Muzzin and Sandin on the right side during this playoff run and playoffs doesn't seem to be solution this season.

I specifically did this team assuming no trades bc without moving muzzin or Sandin a LD trade makes no sense. Keefe refuses to try Sandin on right side. And yes, Holl has been a bit better recently, but better =/= good. Shouldn't be playing.
