Why is everyone so down on the Leaf team starting 2015?

Description
Last year...Ashton Booth,Clarkson, Kozan Sill,Brodie, McKegg,Smith,Frattin,Orr,Granberg,Percy,Leivo all played with Leafs last year. Only Percy and Leivo have shots of becoming NHLers
Kessell gone....that's an improvement by subtraction.
Franson gone....an average Dman maybe occasionally bit more.
Santorell gonei....one guy who played well last year.
So looking at he roster this...Think it's better. Coaching should be better. Feel sorry for ass't Steve Sprott. He deserves another shot at the NHL/AHL soon.
Leafs management last year...Nonis, Loiselle, Poulin. Most any 3 of Armchair GMs could have done better.
Not saying the Leafs are playoff ready, but they should be more competitive in about every game. Last year 26th place, this year 21st. Hope is on the way ....finally

I think they'll be competitive but I can't think of 9 teams that will be worse. I would imagine they'll finish in the standings around where they were last year but with many less embarrassing outings. Tough to see where the goals will be coming from.

To really improve the need Kadri, Rielly, and Gardiner to all become top line players,, Bernier to play like he did for the first year and a half he was with the Leafs, JVR to put up at least 30 goals, Lupul stay healthy, and Babcock to get them to play solid team defense. None of these things are out of the question, but might be asking a lot.

Love the direction of the team though. Rielly, Nylander, and Marner are easily the three best prospects the Leafs have had in a really long time.

Hi Jarrett. Nothing else to do on Saturday afternoon? I'm watching the Blue Jays and rehabbing my wrist. Gee, I guess that's kinda just lazing too. Last year.....the Leafs scored 13 goals less than league average.

The top 5 Leafs gone from last year Kessell, Booth, Clarkson, Franson, Santorelli scored 59 goals. The top 5 coming to the Leafs, Matthias, Arcobello, Spalling, Parenteau, Beck scored 53 goals. Figure not having Kessell, the Leafs should retrieve the puck outta their own end, without being hemmed in for 2 minutes. So I don't think their goal scoring should really be reduced by much. Maybe Bernier, Reimer will be bored at times with the puck in the other zone.

Kessel is not addition by subtraction.... Bozak and JVR are just as inept defensively without the offensive ability Kessel has

Also hope to see Marincin in there ahead of Robidas, he's had his time.

I agree with your general sentiment that the team isn't all that worse than last years team, I'd be shocked to see them get 68 points again this year, they've made some low key good adds if you look at the analytics of the players they picked up and a massive upgrade in the coaching department as well.
