Description
Being as realistic as possible will go threw each area of the team one at a time and figure out what can and can’t happen. The goal for this year should be to get in the playoff and take a deeper step so win a round or two.
Starting with goaltending since it’s a hot topic.
Looks like Holland already made the move replacing smith with skinner. Really don’t see much else can do here. To afford a truer upgrade will require moving kosk but trading our best current option while pacific is very tight comes with big risk. Can’t afford any adjustment period for a new guy. That’s not to say doomed. I have higher expectations for skinner than this but if he can just stay healthy and provide league average goaltending every 2-3 games that’s a very significant upgrade and does provide ability to manage kosk workload better. This tandem shouldn’t have an issue getting us in the playoffs.
Defence wanted to add a rd steady d for pk and 5-5 since light internally in that area.
Nurse Barrie play with mcdavids line
Nurse Bouchard play with Leon’s line
Nurse keeps logging the most 5-5 minutes
Barrie plays on pp1
Bouchard plays on pp2
Keith Ceci
Niemelianen Braun
Both those bottom two pairs can kill penalties and act as shut down pairings.
Forwards this is deepest position and made a bit complicated with including archie. Typically I like having 2 d on scratched list and ready but going 11/7 and having to account for archie boarder issues think it’s best to have two forwards on standby. For games in Canada archie can be used as a energy guy allowing anyone banged up to rest. Looking at the cap there isn’t much room to make tweaks. Could see a situation were willing to package both yam and benson for an upgrade in the top six but that doesn’t free up enough cap to fit an upgrade in so not likely to happen.

I don’t like this move because you’re just pushing a young dman out of the roster, I think you should target a LHD instead

Only reason suggesting yam and benson could be trade bait is next year hyman can move to right side and one of Mcloed nuge or Holloway could slide in if Kane can’t be resigned then it’s a bit riskier but still reasonable to bet on two of them and third filling 3c role so I don’t really see yam as a must keep internal options will likely push him out sooner rather than later so not investing further on him could possibly help in regards to signing Kane for another year or two. Benson I really have tough time suggesting trading I like him and has skill added more grit to his game but could carry more value to a team looking to get younger. Not suggesting we dump both players but keep an eye on.

Big part of it is having 4 rd and 4ld options available for the coach to use an 11/7 system. Since only have three rd nhl capable options and two of which aren’t ideal for pk or shutdown roles wanted to add an option there. Lagesson has been in the system for years really like his play this year but tops off at a solid bottom pair guy this is just swapping a lefty for a righty in the same pairing just better balanced. Doesn’t really effect brobergs status as the next in line he would be with or without the deal.

Yeah okay that makes more sense, thanks for the clarification

I guess I'm hoping the team will be in a position to do a little more than this at the deadline. And I would prioritize an LHD rental over RHD (unless injuries) as I don't think Niemelainen is ready to carry that position. 1 injury to Keith or Nurse puts him way over his head at 2LD.

As far as setting up the pairings, I think Nurse-Ceci have done well together recently, and I like Keith-Bouchard. That leaves rental veteran and Barrie... not sure who that would be. Obviously a guy like Lindholm would be ideal, but maybe Chara would work for less? Lagesson has actually worked well with Barrie since Woodcroft took over, but it's a small sample size.

I should say that I do like Braun as a player, I just don't see that moving the needle if it's the only move.

The idea of having both Barrie and Bouchard mainly stick with the top six guys has both ends of the rink in mind. Offensively pretty obvious reasons but defensively it’s a way to somewhat shelter even against top lines because every player in the top six is capable of solid two way game and provides the best support for them. Like that woody has them more committed to back checking. I toyed with the idea of moving Niemelianen instead of lagesson strictly for a reason you kinda pointed towards if Keith gets hurt who right now would I want covering those minutes. I could be talked into doing that just don’t see having cap to do much else. If nurse gets hurt well crap that sucks can’t really protect against that Keith plays a ton of extra minutes if keep lagesson he plays second pair broberg slides in to third. Kinda does seem safer way to go.

I don't have a problem moving Lagesson, but get a better, more experienced replacement on the left side. I don't move Niemelainen at all.

Maybe that’s what is being scouted on the jets. BEAULIEU Not a sexy option but pending ufa lefty with over 400 games. Easily fit within the cap. Been trying to figure out who on the jets might be scouting.
