Instead of massively overpaying for ERod, why not just re-sign rust? 6*6 with a NMC. I mean if he had to choose between going to a rebuilder for 8-8.5 or stay with us for 6, I’m sure he’d rather stay with a competitive team and a line he knows works.

Ya, no way the Pens let Rust and Letang walk.

And most likely MAF signs with the Pens too and finishes his career out in Pittsburgh and with Sid.

3.5 per is massively overpaying him? It’s overpaying but not by much. I’m sure he will get that whenever he signs. Rust is at least 6 million per and I think he will go elsewhere to sign for more… way too much

This front office has no attachment to MAF. If they wanted him they could have had him for nothing this offseason. I’m also worried that if he comes back and Jarry has a few bad games that Jarry could crumble knowing a Pens legend is here. I’d rather just give a slight raise to Desmith

I disagree. They didn’t want the 7.5M contract. They couldn’t have had him for nothing?? They couldn’t fit his contract this season even at 50% retention.

They will resign him as an UFA though. Probably 2M-3M for 2-3 seasons. He’s the best back-up they could possible get. And Sully, Burke, Hextall all have been wanting a back-up with play-off experience. And MAF would want to come here.

And 3.5M for E-Rod is crazy. Same with 4.25M for Subban.

Erod will sign for 1.5M-2M per 2 seasons. 2.25M for 2 years(5M contract at most).

Yes 3.5 million is massively overpaying him and I’d be willing to bet the pens don’t sign him for even close to that much. If he had kept up his pace, then sure, but the last 2 months he’s come crashing back down to earth. And ok 6 million is minimum what he will take. Which my offer is more than that. He gets 6 million plus a NMC. Again I highly doubt he will go to a rebuilder for more. No other contender has yet cap space to offer him 6, let alone more. The only other place I could see him going is Detroit.

This past off season he had a 7+ million cap hit. The pens had no room to take him on…even for free. Even with 50% retention they couldn’t take him on for free. If he were to come sign a league min or even 1 million per year contract to finish is career as the pens backup, I don’t see how management doesn’t jump all over that.

Took the words right out of my mouth. MAF for free?? Lol.. 7.5M contract. They couldnt even fit 3.75M under their cap this season.

We were so up against the cap. Remember this offseason..?? Could barely resign ZAR. They fought to save 250K with him. He wanted 2M per. And had to wait to the very end to sign Boyle and D.Simon too.

How quickly fans forget how tough this offseason was..lol. And how up against the cap they were.

Yeah, I mean I like the idea of trading for Eberle but I’d rather use Kapanen in that deal than bring in Kubalik. I think with Heinen working so well with Malkin, he should be Malkin’s LW next year and Eberle be his RW. Re-sign Rust to keep the top line together. I think Malkin will probably take 6-7 million at most tbh.

But the whole MAF thing is crazy talk. If he comes back affordable, then the pens jump all over it cause he’d be the best goaltending free agent that will likely go to UFA.

Unless the goaltending falls apart in the post season why would we resign MAF? It makes no sense

Because DeSmith is an unrestricted free agent and MAF would be an upgrade. So it makes tons of sense.

Ville Husso would be an upgrade too. If we are going to get a backup who can play 20 or so games and be as good as a starter he makes more sense. Resigning flower is something fans want but it is practical and the front office has no attachment to him. The only way he comes back is if the new owners want a fan favorite back in town

Sure there are several upgrades in free agency. You can say Holtby would be one too. It’s all a matter of salary. I’m not saying that they’d bring fleury back to bring him back. I’m saying if he wanted to come back and was willing to take 1-2 million tops to finish his career as a backup that can start if needed, management would almost have to jump on that.
