I've had the same though - if the Islanders spend big on a forward in UFA this year, they gotta prepare to at least match that figure with Barzal after 22-23.

With regards to OP's roster here, I'd change up the Edmonton trade and take out Mayfield & Barrie. Both are fine players who excel at different phases of the game, but whoever is on the team is playing RD3 and $4.5M is a big hit for that low on the depth chart. Even if you assume Mayfield's 23-24 replacement at RD3 costs $2M in UFA, you're still saving $2.5M. And we said we wanted at least $9M for Barzal, right? Bam.

I also think if you do that Edmonton trade, you let Koskinen walk and sign a Halak-type for $1-1.5M to give you the 25 or so starts behind Sorokin next year, and you can put that savings towards Wahlstrom's RFA deal after 2022-23 as well.

I would say that we dump Palmieri onto a team, or buy him out after next year or hell even better after this season. Barzal should be paid 8.75M for however long the limit is, so that i'm concerned about. as well as trying to pay for Wahlstrom, and Aatu Raty when the time comes and Dufour when the time comes, if that time comes which it should
