Sorry Pete, Leafs definitely lose out here. I get we shed Mrazek and Dermott, but there is not one guy coming in that comes close to replacing Nylander's value. Graves, Zacha, Vladar are all serviceable players, but none a difference maker. And Lucic would be Richie 2.0 in the Leafs system.

Calgary gets out from Lucic's deal, sacrifice Vladar (who is backup at best). Maybe Dermott finds his offense a little more for them, less pressure than TOR. Mikheyev is a nice add for them and can be signed this Summer. 3rd Round Pick as an add on. Good deal for Calgary.

New Jersey sacrifice solid blueliner in Graves and productive forward in Zacha and taking on Mrazek's money and term might be sacrificial, too, but they would definitely covet Nylander's skill set on a team that has trouble putting the put in the net. I think New Jersey does this just for elite scorer in Nylander.

Toronto gets their stay-at-home guy in Graves (lead league in plus-minus when he was on a good team). Team-friendly money and term like Dubas is looking for. Vladar has stamped himself as a legit backup and he's much cheaper than Mrazek, freeing up money to sign Campbell in off season. Lucic, well he's Lucic. No more f*cking around with the Leafs. Sorry, but Wayne Simmonds isn't imposing enough. Lucic slides in to play 3rd line (see projected lineup below) and maybe 2nd unit PP. Great additions. Nylander is the sacrifice for finding these needs. Besides, they won't be able to afford all these guys in a few years and Nylander is inconsistent and still behind Matthews/Marner/Tavares in the tradeable pecking order. Mikheyev's okay but he's not resigning in the off season anyway, so might as well sweeten the deal with him as a means of making this work.

Projected lineup post trades:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Kerfoot - Tavares - Zacha
Lucic - Kampf - Kase
Engvall - Spezza - Simmonds

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Graves
Sandin - Holl
(Liljegren)

Campbell
Vladar

Pretty good if you ask me.

Thoughts?

All of you guys that are in love with Nylander!!! Sure, elite talent, but we have lots of elite offensive talent. An imbalance compared to DEFENCE and TOUGHNESS, which is what wins in the playoffs when there is no room. Have to give up something to correct inefficiencies! He has been an absolute ghost for I can't how many games in a row now. Sometimes, it's easy to forget he's even in the games!!! As for Lucic, I disagree about him being Ritchie 2.0. If nothing else, he would hit, fight and his name being on the lineup card would make plenty of opponents feel a little more nervous about facing TOR because they aren't made up on just a bunch of pretty sweethearts anymore!!! Ritchie doesn't effect any of those things. The time is now for the Leafs, Shanahan, Dubas. This has to be the mindset.

Getting out of Lucic's ****ty money and term would be enough for them, I'm sure. Dermott makes the lineup and Mikheyev is serviceable.

You might not like Nylander, but he gets a much better return than this in any trade. He's got elite O talent, has improved his D game as well. He may disappear from time to time, but there are a number of other star NHLer's that have done that too. These examples are obviously super elite, but I don't think Jagr even once in his career crossed his own blueline to make a defensive play, and Ovie for the first half of his career didn't play a lick of D. Of course, once he learned to play 200 ft, they won a cup,

Bottom line is, most teams have a star player that fits this mold. You insulate them with a guys like Tavares and Kerfoot who are responsible. And then you win. You can't win by trading them for depth players.

He's been amazing for us this season. We need Lucic's leadership. Lucic doesn't have that much term. Plus like I said we don't have a replacement backup. We are fine the way we are except for one top 6 player to help with secondary scoring

Leafs are not trading the "Young Sundin"aka William Nylander., born in Calgary, but a swede through and through.
Since year one , he wants an nhl paycheque but wants a european schedule, so he only shows up for about 40 games a season.
Much like Sundin when he was an young former Nordique, immensely talented but didn't show up every game .
We wait for his coming out party, to cash in on all those talents more regularly. 2022 playoffs would be a good time to start.

If they could rent Lucic and graves for the playoffs great, but too much $$$$ after that. There are less expensive options still out there.

I don't get this at all. He is pretty much a point a game this season and was a point a game in the playoffs last year (one of the only ones who showed up), he is a zone entry whiz (one of the best in the league) and playing better defensively too AND he is only 25!!
Dutchies a aimé ceci.
