Description
Columbus has a problem. They are too good to tank but only have an outside shot at the playoffs. They also have possibly 2 lottery picks this year (based on how the standings look at the moment) and a solid prospect pool. With the right moves, the Blue Jackets can create a playoff contender, and with the right development of their prospects, could become a contender again.

First, we need to sign the RFA's:

Laine wants a pay raise, so give him a contract that is solidly priced but will take him to free agency. The same goes for Roslovic (who will command significantly less money)

Carlsson and Boqvist can both be bridged pretty easily and the rest should be cheap

The first need, a proper backup goalie. I'm not sure if Tarasov is ready for full-time duty, still, training camp will determine that so let's get a 3G just in case. Keith Kinkaid is a solid if aging extra option.

Columbus does not need to go big game hunting at this point but they have cap space. But I want to make them a playoff team in a changing Metro. Alex Barabanov is emerging as a solid middle-six option who shouldn't be too pricy on the open market.

If players keep developing, Columbus could become a scary team in the Metro soon but Columbus has a decent amount of cap space, a prospect pool with intriguing players and does not need rebuild (rather a retool) to return to competative status

Gotta think Kent Johnson, and potentially Kirill Marchenko hit this lineup. Wouldn't be surprised to see Foudy earn a look as well.

Honestly, Laine looks like he's walking straight to UFA status (2023), meaning you've only got 1.5 years of control left on him. I'd absolutely be listening on him if he's not willing to sign long term.

There is no reason for Carlsson and Bemstrom to get anything over league minimum and I could easily see the jackets non-tendering them. Stenlund has passed through waivers and clearly has no future in Columbus. The Roslovic deal is a pretty big overpay unless he figures it out the rest of the season. I also don't see any reason to bring in another winger with the number of guys we have coming in.

Absolutely, but my goal here was to get Laine on a decent contract that he'd be agreeable to without destroying Columbus's cap. As for the prospects? That's for training camp to discern. I'm just building an offseason roster at the moment. Thanks for the heads up though

This is just an offseason roster, training camp will discern who makes the final roster. But yeah, I could see them dropping Carlsson. As for Roslovic and a winger? I was looking to conserve cap space. Roslovic was a second-line center plug for far cheaper than most centers this offseason. By the end of the contract, Jenner, Sillinger, or Johnson will have replaced him

Conserving cap space would be signing Johnson and seeing what Foudy can do instead of signing another winger to a $3M deal. Plus Marchenko should be coming over and will be close to NHL ready right away.

We cannot predict who will come up or come over so I use legit NHLers for my threads. But yeah, some of these moves aren't totally necessary
