<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>squashmaple</b></div><div>Speaking as a Columbus fan who's had to watch him for a few years now, Peeke is not a top pairing defenseman, and that's okay. What he is a solid, dependable defensive defenseman who was asked to play WAY over his head last season by a rookie head coach who was also in way over his head on a team that was decimated by injuries. The answer is somewhere in the middle. Peeke wil never be a star, but he is a much better player than he was able to show last season, especially in a real system with teammates with other strengths that allow him to play the game in a manner in which Peeke can excel. The AHL lineup of the 2022-23 Blue Jackets was not that team. He probably would thrive in Toronto on the second or third pair, especially with a partner who's more of a rover who can accept a pass. He eats pucks for breakfast and throws hits, although he's a bit of a bonehead and takes stupid penalties sometimes. And it's for this reason (plus everything JD, Jarmo, and Babacock have been saying this summer) that Columbus probably keeps him to see what he can do in Babcock's system, probably paired with Provorov.
I wouldn't miss him if he was traded, but his reputation here and among advanced stats nerds is unfair with the context of the horrible team he was stuck on last season.</div></div>
All it would take is someone looking at Gavrikov's numbers last year in Columbus and then in LA to see some context. Corsi went up 10, defensive zone starts down 16%, +/- increased 20. As you said, Peeke isn't elite, but these nerds just look at numbers and don't understand what goes into them. He is a very serviceable player and some team will love him on the third pairing.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HShockey</b></div><div>I's way more than just hits and blocks. Brodie is our MOST serviceable DFD. Losing Brodie would be a bigger detriment to this team than most people realize. When on the ice, you barely notice him because he does most things right. He got worn out in the playoffs because he and Gio were used too much. Peeke is a Holl type player, and was heavily outscored on despite being sheltered. He's a solid bottom pair piece that hits, blocks, and provides a bit of defensive stability, not a top pair guy whatsoever.
The sheer amount of 2-on-1 this guy stops is unbelievable and is a perfect partner for a guy like Reilly. If you trade Brodie, you want a Pesce in return</div></div>
Saying Peeke was sheltered is absolutely crazy. 68% of his starts were in the defensive zone and he was playing with an AHL partner or on the top pairing for 80% of the season. By no means am I saying he is a top 4 D on a team expecting to win the cup, but he is better than the numbers show last year.

Trading 2OA to CBJ
Even if Laine didn't want to return, which he has said multiple times that he does, I don't think this gets it done. Jarmo would want a high end RD prospect or future #1C in return.

Lets do it
Don't really know Iafallo's value, so can't speak to the trade proposal, but looking at Gus's stats from prior years probably isn't that helpful. You are looking at a year with Torts, a year missed to injury and a year with an extremely slow start due to recovery from the injury. His value since December or so has shot up significantly once he got back into the game and adjusted to the new team around him.
The only input i have on the trade is that the Jackets likely won't look to do a 1 for 1 winger for winger trade. We need to clear out space, so unless the value heavily favors Columbus, I highly doubt Jarmo moves an alternate captain for another winger straight up.

CBJ 22-23 thoughts
I don't really see how any of these outside of the Gus trade make us better and I would be surprised if someone gave us a first for him.
I would love to add Chychrun, but not at that costs. That trade roughly equals 3 firsts and 2 seconds, which is too much to give up.
I don't get why we would trade bean for a scratched winger and a fourth. He is worth way more than that.
I agree with adding some physicality on defense, but we need more of an enforcer than Savard. Peeke and gavrikov can play the shot blocking role that savard held. We need someone that can defend our young guys and play a sound defensive game. Savard isn't capable of that.
Not sure why we would move roslovic for and go sign trocheck at that price. To me they are both middle six centers trocheck isn't worth the premium. Swap roslovic and bean in that chychrun trade and don't sign trocheck.

What would the first overall be worth to CBJ
I see no reason to do this for Columbus. Would likely cost our first this year, next year and maybe a sweetener on top of that to move up about 10 spots this year. I would much rather get the blackhawks pick next year in a much deeper draft with what should be a worse Chicago team next year. I will take my chances on the lottery next year vs giving up assets for the pick this year.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Bdawwwgy1</b></div><div>Kukan is a fine depth d. Letting bemmer go would be dumb, but he definitely needs to be in the AHL</div></div>
He has to pass through waivers and if he has the talent you think he has, I could see someone claiming him. I would rather take the sure thing and trade him. I was hoping he can follow the Bjorkstrand path and start being able to create some plays for himself as he gets stronger but he has just given me no reason to believe he will ever develop into anything more than an AHLer while he is in Columbus.

Bemstrom and Kukan should not be resigned. They are both terrible and shouldn't be on an NHL team. Slot Danforth in for Bemstrom. and Robinson likely finds his way in the lineup whether thats through another trade or foudy not making the roster.

Jackets pass. We have no RD depth and cant afford to move boqvist for a pick 3 years away and an overpaid winger that we don't need. I would love for the jackets to get ahold of one of Arizona's first round picks in the coming years, but this trade just doesn't make any sense to accomplish that.

Jackets fans should be rooting for Chicago to win the lottery this year. Next year in a stacked draft with a tanking team would provide a much better pick than the team and draft this year.

If we dont find any buyers for Nyquist
I may be wrong on this, but don't foudy and bemstrom both have to pass through waivers if they don't make it in Columbus? If that is the case, at least one of them is gone. Also, Jarmo didn't sign Danforth to an extension to scratch him. Gus has to be moved and at $2.75M he is a great deal. One of Johnson or Marchenko has to start out in Cleveland.

No chance Domi comes back. Especially not and that price and he hasn't played C in columbus, so he defnitely isn't a #1C.
Bemstrom also doesn't play C either.
Korpi is gone, Tarasov is the future.
I would be shocked if Jarmo went after Manson. I think we need a guy like him, but not sure it makes sense to commit to a guy in his 30's in a rebuild.

Offseason for a team in a weird position
Jackets are not trading this year's first and definitely are not moving the first in a much better draft. Hypothetically, if the jackets were to move the first it would be part of a package for a young established but controllable #1C or a #1RD. No other positions are of great enough need to move our first pick while we rebuild.

Tortorella Held this team back so much
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TM11</b></div><div>Look at the players Panarin, Wennber, Milano, Bjorkstrand, PLD, Anderson, Duclair, and others have developed since they've left Torts. The point was just to say the team had alot of talent that torts couldnt get out of them bc he molds players into playing his boring system</div></div>
Bjorkstrand needed to get stronger and create his own plays, as he has done that his value has increased significantly.
Anderson was great in columbus. Looking at his numbers, he is the same player in MTL as he was in Columbus. He was probably better off in torts system with his game.
Duclair and Milano don't believe in defense, which is why they werent great fits and have bounced around the league.
Wennberg looked like a #2C that could maybe grow into a #1C. After his concussion, he refused to go to the middle of the ice and he wouldn't shoot the puck. He has been the same player since his one good season (which was under torts)
PLD is a .75ppg player in WPG. Same as columbus.
Panarins numbers are better in new york which was to be expected when the team scores 50 more goals than columbus in a completely diferent system.
I get the narrative is that torts is a bad coach, but it just isn't as true as what people think. Especially when columbus has been one of the youngest teams in the league for like 7 straight season.

A lot of these guys weren't the players then that they are now. Wennberg was a 4C that was scared to do anything after getting concussed. Jenner was a good player but couldnt finish at all. Duchene and Dzingel were there for 2 months. Tex was young and hadn't had a chance to figure out his game. Really the only argument you can make for a player on that list that Torts held back would be milano.
Also as mentioned, a few bad calls cost us at least a game 7 against boston. and Kucherov's cheap shot on Nutivaara ending his playoffs that season.
Just went back and looked and the average team age now is 27.8. That means it was 24.8 back during the run. Boston had so much more size and experience that it was a tough matchup even in the best case scenario.

Next year's draft is significantly better, so honestly top 10 protected could be a better trade if Jarmo doesnt think the islanders turn it around next year. Supposedly a top 15 pick next year will be equal to about the 5th pick this year. Not saying this is enough to move gavrikov though.
